weird mouse problem

have a MS intellimouse optical 5 button...after i updated the software to fully customize the buttons, everytime i reboot, my 2 side buttons and my wheel button don't work until i go into control panel -> mouse, and reapply the settings....am i missing something or should i not have to do this?
