I have a box with win 98se that when I come back and have to tap the keyboard to get the monitor to come back on, the mouse pointer stays in the center. I move to the left side where I have some desktop shortcuts they will highlight and I can click on them but but the pointer is still in the middle of the screen. It is an old ps2 mouse and thought it may be the problem but it seems strange it works fine until I bring it out of power saving mode.

I had this problem a week or so ago for the first time. My hard drive had taken a squat and I did a ghost to a new drive. The old drive had errors in the windows directory and was acting very flaky. So I did a reinstall and everything seems great again except for the mouse having this strange behavior. Anyone seen this before?

BTW the reinstall was from scratch not a reinstall over the old OS.

My first suggestion would be to get rid of WIN98.

Second, sounds like possibly a video problem. Are you saying that when you move to the Icons on the desktop, can you click on and run the programs ?

If it were me, I would re-install the O/S from your original media/CD and not from an image, I would almost be willing to bet you money that your probably would be cured.

Good luck.

Maybe I didn't say it too clear but I did just that. The image was trashed because the drive was trashed. I did a fresh install of 98 from the install CD.

When the screen comes back on from power saving the mouse moves but the visual pointer on screen stays in the center. I have the settings set to single click underline when I hover on icons. So that is proboboly the main reason I knew it was moving. I can start programs while this condition is happening but it is a pain having to guess where the pointer is.
