My main computer:
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe MB
AMD X2 3800 CPU
Patriot Signature DDR400 PC3200 2 GB kit
Antec Smartpower 2.0 500w PSU
MB and CPU temps get up to 46-48C under a load.
I started noticing a few intermittent memory errors while video processing/compression.
Ran Memtest86. Showed 2-3 errors on test #4 and then >75 errors on test #5 and on up.
Returned the Patriot memory for exchange. Meanwhile I put a stick of Kingston HyperX 512MB DDR400 PC3200 in the Asus MB. No errors on the memtest. Ran for approx two weeks with no problems on any programs.
Finally recieved my new Patriot memory kit. Installed it and ran Memtest86. Exact same errors as before on the exact same memory addresses.
Took the Patriot memory and put it in a computer with an Asrock 939 SLI MB. No errors on memtest86. No errors in any computer programs on the second computer.
Tried some Geil 512MB DDR400 PC3200 in the Asus A8n32 mobo. Ran fine.
So I said what the heck, if it works don't fix it anymore. Kept the Geil ram in the Asus and added the Kingston HyperX 512 MB to it. No errors on memtest.
Now two weeks later getting memory errors. If I run memtest86 on the Asus MB after test #4, get all kinds of errors. If I put what ever memory I am testing in the Asrock MB, no errors.
Microsoft Memory Diagnostic tool will not run on the Asus MB(the same CD and floppy will run fine on the Asrock MB) . But if I run Prime95 torture test for 3-4 hours, no memory problems whatsover on the Asus MB.
All the RAM is on the approved list for the Asus MB. I have tried adjusting the CAS from 2.5 to 2.0. No help. I have tried various memory socket configurations.
I have obtained an RMA for the Asus MB. Their technical support said they do not believe it is a chipset problem since the memory runs fine when you first install it on the Asus.
No episodes of severe voltage flucuations. No episodes of overheating. No overclock at all after the first Patriot memory was exchanged. The computer is on an APC 750mAh UPS. The other computer with the Asrock MB is connected to the same UPS.
I am sending in the MB.
Would an electrical short inside the case possibly cause this behavior? Would a defective PSU cause this behavior and not affect other components?
