weird mac os X observation

I find it odd how usable high resolutions are on a mac. I rarely used my monitor at anything greater than 1280x1024 on my PC but I can hit 1600x1200 on the mac without a problem. My pc's text and such was unreadable at 16x12 - I'm sure that the mac adjusts font size, icons/etc. to compensate but why doesn't winXP do the same thing? Is there a way to do this without changing a bunch of setting? I think thi is one major reason graphic designers prefer the mac, honestly (the ability to easily use 1600x1200+ without having to change font sizes and such).

Same monitor hooked up to both (not by A/B switch - the switch limits the refresh rate)..
Sony E500 21' FD trinitron
PC- ATI Radeon 9000 AIW
Mac - Default G4 video card (Nvidia geForce4mx)
Comparing 1600x1200 @ refresh rate of 100

Don't know why, not a Mac user, but, XP does have font size adjustments. It just doesn't assume you want bigger fonts when you go to a higher resolution, some folks enjoy more realestate to work with.

Yep I want my fonts as small as possible (that I can read and XP does this very nicely)

It's an odd balance, i get much more real estate but the fonts are much more readable on the mac..
