weird issue with excel, outlook, and quickbooks

I have a home network P2P running 2 WinXP PRO machines and a NAS device, called Netdisk, that uses software to allow RW access which is mounted at startup.

Just recently the downstairs computer has had issues in Outlook and Excel with a black heading completely covering the top two pulldown menus, and when opening or responding to an email a yellow line shows up.

Also, it seems the data on an excel spreadsheet, which is accessing a file on the Netdisk, is acting weird. It doesnt save info, or reverts back to older info, but only sometimes, from the downstairs machine. When I opened it up on the upstairs machine, with it opened on the downstairs machine, it did not give me a warning it was open. I was able to edit it, and save it. When opened from downstairs, the changes I made didnt show up. I did verify that both computers are accessing the exact same file from the same location. It seems they are accessing and writing the files to different locations, thought they are from the same location.

Also, the Downstairs computer is having issues with updating windows, updating office, updating Spysweeper, etc. Also tried to run online scans, and in the middle IE would just close. Sounds like a virus. Can a virus save data in a file to a different location?

On top of that, Quickbooks had an error and I lost all information that has been entered this month. The file was closed and opened multiple times but the data just isnt there anymore. Again, the file is on the Netdisk. From the downstairs computer, I tried to do a rebuild, but the option was greyed out, it wont let me. I access the info from upstairs, and still the info is gone, but the option to rebuild is available. I attempted to rebuild, and my Upstairs computer froze, and locked up.

My upstairs computer locks up allot, but sometimes runs for days without, then locks up 4 times within an hour. Very unpredictable.

I Just rebuilt both machines over new years eve weekend, reloaded the OS and all sofware, maxed out the memory, and update the CPU's. All was fine for a few months, then weird stuff started to happen.

I dont know if the issues are with the computers, or the Netdisk, or BOTH.

Any useful advise would be greatly appreciated.

Sure sounds like a virus or some other malware. Weatehr its isolated to a single system or stuck in the NAS it will be hard to tell. Your easiest option is to wipe and reinstaqll everything ont eh downstairs computer. It it happens again then it may be in the NAS. In which case as soon as you get a system with a clean install and scann the NAS before you try accessing anything on it in hopes of carthing the problem before it spreads again.

Thats kinda what I am planning on doing. The NAS devices have come down in price so much that I also am going to just buy a new NAS and get rid of the Netdisk. The netdisk is an NAS, but requires installation of a program to access it, which runs continuously and takes up memory, and startup time. I am hoping by replacing the Netdisk and redoing the downstairs computer, this will fix things, but boy it sure is weird!
