Weird ISA modem detection prob in 98SE on K7VTA

Ok...here's the dealio.

Modems: Gateway (USR) Telepath ISA
Generic V.34 ISA

Installed either modem. Win 98SE auto detects on COM2.
Apparently the modem is not communicating with WIN98.

This is where the strange part comes in.

I checked the properties and it has two entries for the same modem.
Futhermore, when I checked the COM ports, it shows two COM1 and two COM2 ports.

I tried removing the 2nd entry, but when I rebooted it would autodetect it again.

For each modem I removed them from device manager, removed the com ports, then rebooted. I know both modems are good and have used the drivers for each with WIN98SE before.

Am I missing something...an IRQ conflict? How would I check the IRQ?

Could it be the ISA slot or is it another prob (somewhere) on the m/b?
Could it be software related?

I want to try a PCI modem as the next logical troubleshooting step, but I don't have one and would hate to buy one needlessly.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re-boot into safemode before reinstalling a modem. Goto device proterties and look thru to see if you have any double devices like comports. Delete any doubles such as if you have 2 com1 ports(delete both of them). Then try installing modem. Win98 shoud detect the comports upon boot.

I'd start over.
Physically remove the modem from the machine.
Goto device manager and remove modems and Com ports.
Reboot into BIOS.
Look at Com ports.
If you're not using COM2 disable it!
Save settings.
Exit BIOS and reboot (remember, the modem is still out of the
machine).
Look at device manager, there shouldn't be any modems showing and
only Com1.
Now shutdown the machine, install internal modem, startup machine.
Win9* should detect new hardware, install drivers.....
Greg (did I miss anything?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll try them when I get home (in the morning) and post results.
