Alright, so yesterday I was downloading some animes and the speed was pathetically slow (20Kb/s or so), at first I though it was just busy servers or something, since it happens often with those DDL sites like Megaupload etc, however I tried a whole bunch of them and all had the same problem

At this point, just general browsing etc worked fine, it was only downloads that had this speed problem... Fast forward to today, and the problem got worse, now I cant even open half the sites I visit, it just sits there loading whatever

The weird thing is it seems to be totally random... Like, as I am posting this, I am downloading something a 700 kb/s, yet, I have trouble opening Gmail... WTF?!

Could this be ISP related? Ive used the same ISP for 10 years and I dont remember this ever happening before... Its not spyware/virus either because I running a clean install, plus I tried the other 2 pcs in my house and they have the exact same problem

Im clueless as to what the problem might be... Has this happened to anyone before? Right now I cant do anything but wait it out... Sigh

Let me guess:
You are just like the majority of ATOT, you never shut down or even restart your computer, nor do you routinely reset your Modem/Router, AMIRITE?

I do both quite regularly and seem to never suffer the majority of problems that many users complain of.

Just sayin'.

First, reset your computer, modem, and router like jupiter suggests. That'll be an easy way to clear up most home networking problems.

Might be DNS - you can flip your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 for a test and clear your cache (or reboot your box). The nslookup command can also query various DNS. If Google's DNS works fine, then your ISP has DNS issues.

Also, if you're using torrents or other applications with many connections, that can cause issues. Too many connections can overwhelm routers or modems.

If everything is downloading at a constant speed, you could be capped.

You can run pings to google or what have you to check for packet loss. Use a -t option on the ping command to do a continuous ping, assuming you're on Windows. If you get timed out notices, you're getting packet loss and probably have an issue with in-house cabling/phone line/external to your house assuming the rest of your network works OK.

You can always call your ISP and they can do some quick checks on their end over the phone. I'd probably give them a call after you do a full reboot on your networking gear and computers. You can run the other tests while on hold.

At least it's not as weird as my girlfriend's DSL. It works fine for hours, then packet loss, then it dies. Unplug the phone cable and plug it back in (not even resetting the modem/router) and it works fine again. And this is on a direct line to the service box with no telephones on the line. Gonna have to grab Verizon on that one.

Thanks for the advice... Might sound stupid, but resetting the router not once, not twice, but THREE times fixed the problem

Edit: Or so I thought... Now websites load fine again, but downloads still crawl... Grrr
