but it never finishes it says there was a compatability error...in My device manager I already have 2 primary Ide channels, 2 Secondary channels, and 3 standard Dual Channel IDE controllers, and then there are these 2 IDE channels with the yellow qm ...What gices ...am I missing something ....My computer works fine ..no problems with drives or anything....I have Win XP.... Its just very annoying.... would this be a windows problem or a Hardware problem..I tried uninstalling and disabling them and it just reinstalls...

I posted this in Motherboards but I think it was the wrong forum..

first of all, if you are asking for help about ide channels its best to let folks know your mobo involved, so they can figure out the IDE SATA situation
also which vers of XP, size/# of HDD, make

secondly, you are only supposed to have 1 controller for IDE, so Xp appears to be reinstalling new devices, prob because there is a prob with your setup (jumpers?) or drivers

Boot into safe mode, remove all IDE and controller devices and reboot - let XP redetect and reinstall (leave XP CD in drive)
