On 09/04/2006, I bought a Arctic Cooler Accelero X2 from Newegg. I had a X1900XTX at the time and the fan noise was just too much for me. So, I get the cooler and mount it to the card. I use it, then get rid of the X1900 XTX for a 8800GTS, but I kept the Arctic Cooler (I put back on the stock cooler).
Fast forward... I still have my 8800GTS and am still happy with it. I bought my son a X1650 Pro card for his PC. It was only $26 new (after M.I.R. and Google Check Out). Unfortunately, they sent me a 512MB card that only did 500 Core and 270/540 Memory rather then the 600 Core and the 800 Memory that it should have. I RMA'd the card and I should get it back tomorrow. I picked up an inexpensive 8600GT, that is still sealed up in the box. Just to have on hand if I am still unhappy with the X1650 Pro. If I have to, I'll RMA it again or just sell it off. Either way, and my son gets the PNY 256MB 8600GT.
I got to wondering if I could use the Accelero X2 with either of these cards. I knew that there were 2 revisions and it looks like I got the NVidia one shipped in the ATI package. When I looked up my previous orders on Newegg (dang, I shopped there a lot!), I found the link to the cooler I bought, BUT the pictures for that card don't match the cooler that I had. Here is the link to the Cooler that I bought: Deactivated Item
In that link, the back of the cooler looks like THIS. I do remember being surprised that the ATI X1900 XTX stock cooler had a slightly different set of holes then the Arctic Cooler, IIRC, it was only one hole, so I didn't really consider it a problem. The Core was certainly mounted securely and the memory chips made contact with all of the pads very well. If you look at the first picture of that cooler (all the way on the left), you will see a slight bump (down in the corner where the 'X2' part of the label is). That bump is there in the first and fourth photos, but not in any of the other photos.
THIS is what the back of my Cooler looks like (except mine has my memory heat pads still stuck on it) and I certainly did not get a 'back plate' included in my kit. The weird thing is that the little 'bump' is only visible in the fourth photo and none of the others. Perhaps I should mention that my cooler does have that little rectangle hole in the end of it over where the heat pipes end. One of the coolers has that, the other doesn't.
BTW: I fell asleep in front of the keyboard last night. I am sending this off without proof-reading or even checking if the links work right. Sorry for any errors, I'll check it after I get back from work (I've been late to work too many times when I sit in front of the PC in the morning)!
