weird HD spin up / down problems

just installed a new Abit IC7-G to replace an Asus P4P800 that was having the "system failed cpu test" problem (2nd board with same problem..)

I am not entirely convinced that I don't have some other piece of hardware causing issues, and this system is only about 5 months old, so I don't have a reliable track record with any single part so...

For some reason, one of my HD's powers down, then back on intermittently.. I noticed it much more frequently on the last board (after it hard crashed and ended up dead), and I think it was more than one because it was louder.

At the moment, I have 3 HD's partitioned as follows: 160 gig maxtor: 80 gigs system, 80 gigs striped with: 80 gig WD special edition HD; 250 gig WD partitioned as one.

The 160gig is a Serial ATA, and is connected to the 1st serial ata port on the mobo. the other two drives are IDE, and are connected to the secondary IDE channel (doesn't seem to make a diff).

My Asus board just froze tight one day, then failed to stabilize and eventually just died. I am worried that i have some component that is somehow affecting system stability other than the mobo. I have a 480 watt power supply, and I do have some case lights hooked into the mix. However, all leads to the hd's are connected with pass thru dealies, so I guess I don't see how the lights would make that much diff. All lights are LED's, except for one electro-luminescent tape strip light that has it's own power converter.

Any thought would be highly appreciated, as I am very sick of tinkering and would like to actually use my system. I am considering removing the 80 gig HD from the mix, but I get nice pseudo-raid performance from this set-up.. or at least I was :(

side note: apps run from striped drive are not stable, and hang occasionally. I attribute this to the spin up / down ? Also, a light plugged into the same outlet as the computer flicks once when I hear the spin noise.. maybe I should RMA my PSU?

I am almost positive it is a PSU issue. First I would unhook ALL of the lights and any unecessary drives etc and see if stability/issues resolve. If they do, then it's most likely a power problem. I am all for case-modding and have done some myself, but not at the risk of stability. I always get a PC running stable, burned-in with SETI or something else stressful before adding the eye candy.

Good luck!
