WD drive went bad, WD sent me a new one. Before I formatted or anything, I ran spinrite on it to make sure it had no bad sectors and whatnot. Everything was fine. Booted into XP, used Partition Magic 7 to format and partition it. Pulled as much of the data off the old drive that I could. everything's working fine in XP. When I rebooted I ran spinrite just to check things out. it gave me an error saying the bios or bios extention was reporting the partition size was larger then the drive. Didn't write down the exact message, but that was the basic of it. So I reboot and go into my bios, it's showing the drive as my slave, 200 gigs. When I hit the auto detect button, it shows a weird ascii character and locks up the PC.

I can see all the data on the drive fine in XP, but this spinrite/bios issue has me a bit concerned. I don't have any way to back up the data on it, what can I do to try and correct this error so I can properly see the drive from the bios?

thanks

You may want to clear the CMOS and try it again.

Sometimes when HD's go bad they tend to mess up the BIOS settings.
