Weird game/desktop gamma issue

I run a Radeon 8500LE latest drivers, WinXP Pro and DX 8.1, and when I run Morrowind I have the gamma set up a bit. Just lately (with no software changes made) it's started setting the desktop a bunch brighter when I exit Morrowind, as if the in game gamma applied to all of Windows. I then have to go to desktop properties > Settings > Advanced then to the color tab of the ATI control panel. I don't have to do anything else, just clicking on the color tab darkens the desktop back where it should be. Any clue anyone? Its a real pain cuz I play and quit Morrowind a lot lately.
