i purchased some fonts from myfonts and it seems like it overrwrote my helvetica or i accidentally deleted it.

not sure why it's not defaulting back to arial. i have all the helvetica fonts installed since i purchased them for illustrator but i don't have just normal windows Helvetica. not sure how it was overwritten but it is.

i have tried to even purchase regular helvetica but it doesn't seem to be for sale. always weird variations like Helvetica LT or something like that.

any ideas?

PS. i am on win7 using FF. fonts look fine in IE.

Try going to Tools -> Options -> Content -> and see what your default font is set to.

my default font is times new roman which shows up fine.

i've analyzed the CSS for that web page and helvetica is the only font i don't have installed. it should just go to arial but i dunno.

i have it set to firefox to ignore my font settings and use what the webpage suggest which has always worked for me. i rather see what the webpage developer wants me to see than just the fonts i pick

Windows does not come with a standard Helvetica font. It uses Arial as a replacement. It looks like either your font substitution got messed up or your specific Helvetica font that you installed is messed up.

In order to fix the sysem fonts, you can perform a repair install of XP. You can also check the registry to see what font substitution is setup for Helvetica. It is located in:

HKLM/software/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/FontSubstitutes/

seems like the registry is set correctly.

i'm also using win7, not xp but ya i'd rather not reinstall windows if possible since it only affects a few websites.

even in word, Helvetica is a font option but when i select it, it automatically switches another font (like, word remembers helvetica is there but when it looks for it, it can't find it)

I'm not completely familiar with Win7, but I assume that it has a repair function similar to XP or Vista. It would not be a reinstall. Basically, it just copies over the basic files that Windows uses without affecting program installs and data.

oh yes, a windows repair, sure. sorry misread your advice. hmm...could do that. always worried that a repair will overrwrite things that i don't want overwrriten.

i obvioulsy googled my problem and it seems pretty common in firefox but no one could suggest a fix

What happens if you use IE8 and not Firefox?

what should i change the character encoding to?

yep tried both, doesn't help. im almost positive it's a font issue since when i choose in firefox: "use my own fonts and ignore what the website wants blah blah" it displays fine. And the text that cannot be displayed is Helvetica, Arial. Helvetica WAS on my computer but now I can't even use it in word (even though it still shows up in the font menu list inside word).

annoying.... =\

OK - we have now isolated the fault to Firefox. Let's go from there.

hmm...fun problem.

oh well...i switched to Chrome beta + extensions and haven't looked back. I was a firefox fan boy but I really am enjoying Chrome. Just feels "smoother" and more sprite. prolly all in my head but I'm happy and haven't opened firefox in a week.

just clarify, the fonts show up fine in Chrome. Has to be a profile + addon problem in firefox that i don't want to troubleshoot
