Weird Folder on Hard Drive

Hey. I have a weird folder "48dc575e63051d4d33" on my 2nd hard drive. I don't know where it came from or how it got there. And the thing that sucks is I CAN'T DELETE IT 🙁

There's nothing in the folder except another folder called "update" and I can't access that folder due to an "access is denied" error.

When I right-click and properties, it shows that there's no data in either folder.

I tried booting in DOS and deleting it, but same thing.

I even tried Windows Recovery (F2 during Windows CD Boot) or whatever, and it said the same thing.

Safe mode didn't work either.

Anyone has/had this same issue?

Here's something that would probably help out. The folder showed up after I installed IE7 but then canceled the installation. After wards, I formatted my comp and installed everything from scratch.

Any help to delete this folder would be great!

Thank you!

See if you can change security permissions on the folder. I'm guessing you can't though.

Maybe try putting the drive in a second system as a spare drive and try to delete it? Format the drive?

Can't change security permissions 🙁.

I would format the drive 🙂 but there's about 400 gbs of mp3s and I don't have enough space on my other drive to back them all up 🙁

Try taking Ownership of the directory, then take security/permissions to it afterwards if necessary. It's probably just the files left over from the partial IE7 setup.

400gb's of mp3's?!?!?! that's over 50,000 mp3's at 8mb apiece!

But anyways, folders like this can be created by malware, but can also be creating by xp or other programs. If you run AV/spyware scans and nothing pops up, I wouldn't be worried.

I'm a little surprised you got any response with a sig like that.
. . . says the guy with a 15 line sig

Anyways, that folder is probably a temporary folder for installation of some program, Microsoft does this frequently with their installers. I think that's from the installation of IE7. And for some reason it didn't remove itself properly.

A boot cd, like what is that one, knoppix? should be able to remove it.

If I had 400GB of MP3 files, which I assume is a fair amount of work to accumulate, I'd want those files backed up. A 400GB drive is about $100 nowadays.

This folder has to do with a Windows update. I'm not sure if it is the upgrade to IE7 or not.

You just need to log in as administrator to delete it. If you are using XP Home, enter Safe Mode at boot, log in as admin and delete it. If you have never set up a true administrator account, just leave the password field blank and hit the enter key.

Nothing sinister about the folder, it's from an update. Piss-poor thinking on M'soft's part to name it like this. Probably people all over the planet freaking out.
