I have an extremely weird problem I cannot diagnose.
I had a computer that started blue screening, then would boot but turn off, and finally stopped booting. I assumed it was the motherboard (lets call it motherboard A). So I replaced the motherboard.
The new motherboard (Motherboard B) simply shut off one day without warning. I replaced the power supply and all was fine for a few more weeks. Then the power light on the motherboard started flickering, which worried me. Then a few weeks after that ASUS Probe reported that my +5V was actually 6.10V. But the computer otherwise seemed to run fine. Then it stopped booting. So I swapped out the power supply for a THIRD power supply. The first and third power supplies were top end power supplies, only the second one was a cheap 400W one as that is all I had available.
With the third one, it stopped booting as well. Out of frustration I tried Motherboard A again, and now it boots! Then few minutes later Motherboard B boots again. Each time I was moving the processor between the two boards.
So in all of this, the only parts that have not been swapped out are:
1) The processor. Its an Intel Q6600.
2) The RAM. However I have 4 x 1 GB and several times I?ve taken them out and tested with just one, and no matter what one I put in the same results. I don?t think it?s the RAM.
3) My electrical supply. I am using a UPS. But years ago I had another weird problem where one of the computers that was behind the UPS was backfeeding and killing other devices on the same UPS. Took me months to find that out and a lot of lost equipment. However I don?t think that?s the case as nothing else is acting up.
Does anyone have ANY ideas in this crazy situation? I?m booted now on Motherboard B and the motherboard power light now is completely non functional, and ASUS probe says my +5v is 6.12?. And that?s with power supply #3. It also told me I had 6.12v with power supply #2.
