OK, so before I was getting an error when installing XP saying that a file could not be found...so I used MY install disk and it finally ended up working! Yay, so that problem was solved. I began to install XP, then I walked away to go out and eat dinner...came back a while later and the computer is telling me that a problem was detected etc...

any ideas? I guess the first step is to restart as the screen says...but I am getting frustrated...whats the next step in troubleshooting? THanks

I am getting the same errors. Dll file is corrupted or missing.
I reformated, should I have done the slow format instead of the fast?
Do I have a bad os? The disk is new, so it would not be dirty.

It could also be an issue with RAM, the CD-ROM drive or your IDE cable. The slow format will scan each sector on the disk; if the HD has worked without issues prior to the format, it's unlikely that that is the culprit.

ipv6P.chm sounds like something related to (big "duh" coming up) IPV6. You should be able to skip it without her experiencing any problems. No promises, though.

If that doesn't work, borrow a disc from a friend or get one from BT and just use the key on her disc.

Bypasss the file & see if there are others that don't copy. If you get more errors, there's most likely a problem with the CD. If that's the only one you get, it might not be such a big deal because it's just a compressed html file more than likely used for a help menu or information

Alright...I tried blowing on it/wiping it and got the same error. Then I tried to skip the file....and it came up with another file that couldn't be found but the file name was just a bunch of ????????s ....THEN I got the blue error screen that said Windows shut down because it detected an error, so i restarted. Then when it was booting, as it was about to boot from the cd it gave a different wierd error but I can't read it all since the resolution of my screen cuts out the whole word, but it says "?DR is missing, press CTRL ALT DEL to restart" where the ? is the part of the word I can't see. Any more ideas here? CDR? DDR? This is beginning to frustrate me!

"??LDR missing" is just NTLDR missing. Just means you have a bad install. But the fact that you got other errors after skipping the IPV6 file probably means, as others have said, bad disc.

Borrow or download another disc and use the key from the disc that's failing.

Any ideas on my new error? I think the next step is to open up the case and make sure all the connections are sound. Argh!!

Edit: I am able to get into BIOS and fiddle around. Doesn't that mean that most of the hardware is working correctly atleast? Or no? Thanks

What new error? The *DR? Again, that's just the windows bootloader complaining of a bad install. There is a 90% chance this problem is due to a bad install disc. Beg, borrow, or steal another copy, and use your current CD Key.

Well.. sort of. You could still have various hardware erros and still dink around in the BIOS, but I'm pretty sure this is a XP install disc problem.

If you get the same error every time during install, it's almost certain that bad install media is the culprit. If you get different errors every time, then you can start looking at the hardware.

I concur with the bad CD theory. It's happened to me many times.

In fact, you people just reminded me to make a copy of my main install disk. :)

It's nice that my work buys me an MSDN subscription, I can just download it again from MS :D

The missing files problem can indicate bad ram, Daveshel is right, try a memtest86 and see what happens. Also try reseating the ram/cards a few times. Maybe try the install with a single stick and just the video card if possible (had to do that the first time I did 2kpro on an old machine).

I think you guy are sending the OP on a goose chase with the RAM. While it's certainly possible, an "unable to copy file" is MUCH MUCH more likely to be bad media than RAM. If he gets new media and it still gives the same errors, or if he gets other, more random and less-reproducable errors, then I think we should suggest him looking at RAM. Besides, if this computer has no OS, it's going to be much more of a chore to find another computer to test the memory in than it is to find another CD.

OP - just go find another XP Home CD and try then get back to us if you still have problemes.

I would go with the memory theory. I have had it happen many times. DDR will work enough to boot, but the full install of Xp is stressfull enough to cause a failure.
