Weird error when trying to re-install Windows 98SE

I booted up yesterday and received an error saying I needed to re-install windows. I got out my bootup floppy and Windows disc ready to do a quick install. I boot up on my floppy with no problem and then start the setup of Windows. After scandisk runs and the message saying preparing to copy files I receive an error saying "Standard Mode: Fault in MS-DOS Extender" and then under this is a set of numbers and letters like this

EC=435C CS=0053 IP=2811

I have tried different bootup floppies and Windows install discs. I have tried using an old blank harddrive and I get the same error. I am not sure what is causing this error. Any ideas?

Thanks

heres a quick solution if you want...get rid of that HORRIBLE os

maybe the ide controller on the mobo, cd rom, or cable

Yes I have wanted to move up to XP. I have the means to get it, but for now I would like to get my system up and running again to get the files off of it that I cannot replace. I will rip the rig all apart and put it together to see if it is just a connection problem.

"Standard Mode: Fault in MS-DOS Extender"
That's a memory error, a DOS extender lets a DOS protected mode program access memory above 640 K (K not MB).

You might want to run memtest or similar to see if one of your RAM sticks has gone bad (or possibly the motherboard itself, making the RAM look faulty).

If you attached the hard drive to another computer (as a data drive) you could attempt to run scandisk and copy off the files that are readable.

Hey DaveSimmons thanks I took out one stick of RAM and now I am installing Windows again. Thanks to Bacillus for the informative link. I am glad it was not any other option for the cause of the problem especially the virus option.

Well looks like a reason to go get more RAM haha. Maybe I will splurge and get a Gig stick.
