Hey, guys. I built a machine for a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago, and she called me up last night telling me that she was getting a weird error message at startup of Windows XP Home. So I hopped on over there to take a look, and it was indeed strange-it had no file references, just useless numbers and an option to report to Microsoft. It wasn't a BSOD, or anything so devastating, just a window in the middle of the screen as soon as Windows finishes loading, saying something about it's recovered from an error, here are the details, blah, blah, blah. It happens everytime Windows is loaded, sometimes you have to close it more than once to make it go away. She told me this first happened when she had just installed a new program, which her son was using. The message appreared for the first time during that program, and is now appearing on every startup. The program was Broderbund's Total 3D Home Deluxe or something similar, she said it was a fairly old program. I've looked it up on their site, and the requirements specifiy Win95 and Win98, nothing more. So I just assumed it was incompatible with WinXP, then uninstalled and removed its left over files. The message is still coming up every startup. I've eliminated entries in the Startup folder, the Run folder in the registry (both Local Machine and Current User), used MSConfig to disable everything trying to figure out if there was something that software installed that was starting up with Windows. The only way I could get rid of the message was by disabling the Error Reporting service, effectively making it invisible. I've also loaded the Last Known Good Configuration trying to get it to disappear. I've not yet had any luck with any of this. I wrote down some specifics of the error which are:

BCP1: 00000063, BCP2: 00000002, BCP3: 00000000, BCP4: 804DA4FC, Product: 768_1

If anyone has any helpful advice, it would be greatly appreciated. There's always the option of reinstalling Windows of course, but I'd like that to be a last resort. ;) Thanks again.

hmmm
i think the software left some "garbage" DLL files and/or registry keys.... i dunno how to look it up though'. Have u tried the Sytem Restore?

another option:
- Run Command prompt
- type sfc /purgecache
- then, type again sfc /scannow
- or read the commands with sfc /?

hope that helps :)
