Weird driver in LA

I live in the LA area, and sometimes I just don't understand how people drive. I can't say I am a very good driver, but some people just do things that doesn't make sense.

The other day I was at the light trying to make a left, and this lady in mid 30s with her cheap old Civic behind me. It was at peak hours so there were quite some traffic. When the green turned green, cars started to move. Since I would have to wait until the on-coming traffic are gone before making the left, there's no reason for me to pull forward fast, so I just let the car roll forward.

Now I heard several horn. Out of curiosity, I looked into the mirror, and I saw the lady saying (read her lips), "Come on, go!" Now it's cute, all the on-coming traffic are still there, so I was supposed to hit them to make the left. Of course not.

Well, finally came the time where I could make the left, I made the left and she just followed without looking if there're some other cars coming. Results, more horns on her.

That's not the end yet. The road I turned into has 3 lanes, and I stayed at middle. This lady continued her lips talking, went straight to the right lane, and started accerlerating. Now she's totally showed off her stupidity, since the right lane will have to merge left, and her Civic is never good enough to catch up on me. So I just simply stayed ahead of her and forced her to merged back into my lane.

Good time came and I saw this SUV driving slowly on the left lane (now it's down to two lanes). Without a doubt, I braked, and stay close with the SUV, so she would have to drive slowly. And yes, her lips couldn't stop, but why would I care?

After one light I thought I would just let her go, so I accelerate and passed the SUV, and in no time she accerelate and cut to left lane, and I could sense that the driver in the SUV was "SOBing" her as well. In order to show her anger, she cut back into my lane, which I expected already.

However, there came the funniest part. Now she was on the right lane right? But probably coz' she was too pissed off by me, she forgot that she had to turn left at the left (she was at the light already), so she simply made a clown out of herself by slamming onto the brake, hit the left-turn signal (believe me, she did remember that), cut to the left lane, and then one more lane to the left-turn-only lane.

That simply forced me and the SUV to brake. Now I didn't intend to do anything, but I guessed the SUV was angry, so he kept on horning her. The car on the left-turn lane from on-coming traffic also horned (probably coz' he also thought she's insane). Well, with two cars supporting, there were no reason for me not to horn, so I did as well. Therefore ended up three cars horning at her at the same time. She should feel good.

This is only one of the many examples I have seen here, but this one happened just yesterday, and i really have no clue what was wrong with her. I guess with a normal mind I will never understand.

I guess so... When I was down in San Diego it was so much better. People are all so polite to each other (or so I have seen)

I'll tell you what's priceless:

Tummy-tuck: $1000
Fake-tits: $5000
Outfit : $300
Cell phone: $200
Bigass SUV: $50,000

Seeing this woman sitting in her SUV at 6PM rushhour, talking on her cell phone, banging on the steering wheel, telling her date she is gonna be late for dinner plans: PRICELESS

Supradude - you reminded me... one time i was on the freeway, there was this lady in the suv, and i highly doubt whether she could even see the windshield..... coz' her car was simply "swinging" among 3 lanes. ok, she was trying to stayin the middle one, but kept on crossing to the left and right. we are talking about freeway here....

mpg - well unless the driver beside me is driving ridiculously slow, i usually just drive at around the same speed. but yesterday was different. somehow i was so thankful to find this SUV driving at around 25mph ON THE MAIN STREET. you know, it's hard to find!

Hamburgerpimp - haha, nice one. People in San Diego was so nice. The first time I went there I didn't know I had to turn left, and the driver on the left turn lane happily let me in without any horn from cars behind. try it in LA, see how many fingers you will get :)

Driving in LA is quite crazy.. At least I don't have to commute to downtown everyday :D

A lot of people in LA doesn't know how to drive correctly in the rain.. and I'm scared sometimes because I've seen quite a few accident happened in rain in front of me, due to stupidity.

I hate it when some people on the freeway will just tailgate you at 70mph and they are driving these huge trucks and SUV's which probably have twice the stopping distance of a car.
They need to start giving tickets to people tailgating at 70mph. Or at least pull them over and warn them.

esung - true, people drive even worse under the rain. Some of them drive toooo slow (30mph on the second fast lane on the freeway?) but some of them are keeping too close with the car in the front....

samarth - i agree, they just never understand that they simply need more distance to brake. usually what i do when this happen is slightly hit the brake and accerlerate again. to them they will see that i suddenly stop and they are not able to stop (but i accelerate again already). usually they will start keeping off some distance. if they still continue? i'd let them pass. after all i don't need to stay ahead of people, i just want to reach my destination

Commuting in LA can be fun and a pain the ass. I geniusly decided that I should commute to school, two or three days a week. My drive starts near Venice Beach and ends in Pomona. Some genius I am! In all fairness, I partially chose to do this because I have a killer job that's about 15 minutes away from my house. I'd rather commute to school then to the job, at least I go against traffic that way. Plus, I get to stay in the nice 310 as opposed to the 909. Kevin & Bean listeners know what I'm referring to...

This is a good story. I live in LA as well (look for a non modded Acura CL Type S, its tough to find an import car non modded in LA nowadays) and have had my share of driving experiences.

My first "real" car was a 1988 Camaro Z28 with a rebuilt engine, tranny, suspension, etc. That car was very fasr (305HP) and I used it quite frequently to get around bad/stupid drivers. Now that I sold that car and bought my Acura, I still find it quite necessary to avoid bad drivers on the road -- they only are there to slow you down or to get in your way.

I do like slow down a bit for a very impatient driver, forcing them to merge in ways that they would rather not. Driving in LA changes people quite quickly. You will go from Dr. Jekyl (sp?) to Mr. Hyde (sp?) in a matter of seconds while the car starts. I do like to drive in LA (lots of road to cruise on), but I could live without the traffic.

true, personally i really don't mind people drive fast or go cut in front of me, coz' first of all my camry LE only has 120hp and it can do almost nothing (except tricking a little Civic, haha :D), and secondly i never want to stay ahead all the time.

but i do want people to drive smart. i have seen this stupid kid, who drove his 3000GT and taunted a mustang, but ended up crashing into the bush. what's wrong with them? sometimes these nervous people TRY to drive fast and change lanes all the time, but in fact they are slower than what the fast lane is doing.... (when was the last time cutting into the slowest lane helps you that much?!?!)

but on the upside, it's funny seeing stupid people driving here, something to keep you awake...

It is pathetic. All these cheap cars customized to look like race cars with big exhausts, huge spoilers, lowered like crazy etc etc.... and all they have is a 150hp.

Simply pathetic.

Well yeah, I think those ricers are weird of the weird... If you have the bucks, go and get a BMW with more horses, stop making the exhaust on your CRX sound like a jumbo jet!

Last time I was in LA I had to comment on how calm the traffic was. Around here too many people just don't get some simple concepts:

Tailgating a big rig is utterly pointless
Passing someone because you want to do 1MPH faster on flat ground is stupid
Failing to push harder on the gas because there is a hill after said pass is a good way to piss people off
That semi at the top of the hill isn't moving very fast
You are moving fast
Traffic is moving about as fast
That semi isn't going to accelerate any time soon
The lane is merging, so don't cut off people trying to get in the other lane
...especially the semi
...unless it's that idiot again
No, traffic is not moving
No, tailgating isn't helping
...and changing lanes 20 times/miles isn't either
If 10 people in a row just moved over, there is a reason
If you try to get infront of those 10 people, they may close you off because you're an idiot
...and you may find yourself 20 cars back.
The road is going down hill, let off the gas
Yet again, the road is going uphill, get on the gas

....to be continued :)

That is nothing, all i can say is stay out of Little Saigon in Orange County. At least that lady seemed to know what she was doing.
