weird drive letter setup

mangled

Senior member
I reformatted and reinstalled XP. My system has two internal ide hard drives (neither partitioned), a DVD drive, CDRW drive, and an internal memory card reader.

The weird thing after the install, is that XP assigned the main drive with the system on it, letter H. The second drive was I. It assigned the memory card reader and two disc drives D-G.

Why did it do that? Does it have anything to do with which drives are hooked up to the two IDE connectors? The two drives are on one and the two disc drives are on the other ide channel.

any help is appreciated...I'm thinking I need to start over again because I just can't get used to have drive H be my main drive. It's already causing problems when downloading files. I choose drive H and I get an error asking me to insert the drive.

When you reinstall windows, make sure you unplug any drives you aren't using for the install, especially the card reader. Plug them back in after the install.
