id Software is now selling Doom Collector's Edition with stated compatability as being:

Requires - Windows 95/98/Me/2000
Have - Because it claims to be compatable with Win2K, it is of course XP compatable.
Requires - 100% Windows 95/98/Me/2000 compatible true 16-bit sound card and drivers
Have - XP's own SBLive! and SB PCI128 drivers as well as updated Live! drivers.
Requires - 100% Windows 95/98/Me/2000 compatible mouse and driver
Have - Tried intellimous Pro, Explorer, and Wheel Mouse (All MS mice)
Requires - 100% Windows 95/98/Me/2000 compatible keyboard
Have - MS Internet Keyboard Pro

I recently decided to install Doom to have another romp before Doom III is released and found it unbearably slow and choppy on my WinXP systems. The sound was increadibly choppy and would nearly freeze the game as soon as a sound effect was played. I tried Doom95 and I could not get my mouse to work (It treated it like my mouse didn't exist in game, though it configured correctly in the options). I tried disabling sound on the DOS version and it began running way too fast (Though no where near unthrottled speeds). I tried various compatability modes and such and I can't get anything to work.

Obviously, if they're selling a new Doom package it must work with XP (The newly repackaged Wolfenstein 3D, not Return to Castle Wolfenstein, even states that it REQUIRES Windows 9x, ME, 2K, or XP, even though it's an ancient DOS game). Anyone else have any luck with Doom on XP?

Because the DOS problems obviously have something to do with sound card compatability (Even though I tried it on two different Creative cards), I will try on my laptop's ESS chip when I get a chance. I hope it doesn't have the speed throttleing issue though :|

Well if you didn't buy into the NTFS hype you can always boot to DOS and run from there, right?

Or use Partition Magic to shrink an NTFS partition to make room for a FAT32, or convert a non-C: partition to FAT32 (after doing a full backup!)

Could I fit SB Live DOS drivers on a floppy disk?
(do DOS drivers work for SB Live?)

I just had the same problem with the mouse, ill bet you have a usb mouse right?
Well doom doesnt support that, so what you need to get is jdoom.
It fixes the mouse problem plus it enables opengl for doom, looks a lot better now.

Yep, get Jdoom for sure. Not only does it allow you to run in high res with 3d acceleration, but the engine has been completly redone with colored/dynamic lighting, a particle system, support for 3d models, and a ton of other fun stuff. I would highly recommend downloading the 3d models (its all free). I've been playing DOOM2 all over again in Jdoom and it looks awesome!

I've toyed with WAY too many 3D ports, now I just want the classic software for nastalgia :)
I was using a USB and PS2 mouse at the same time and neither worked. I'll try just the PS2 one next time, but besides, it was Doom95 that didn't work with the mouse, and Doom95 gets its input from the OS right?
