Weird distorted sound coming from TV...

after watching about 30-60 mins of dvr'd shows. I have comcast and it's distorted audio/echo coming out. This is also a problem with my htpc & netflix after watching 1 hour or more, but with netflix, it isn't consistent. I also find that reinstalling silverlight temporarily solves the issue. With the dvr, I have to completely power down the tv and cable box and power back up. I can't recall if the picture gets distorted as well. I do know that in netflix, the picture is fine, just the audio that gets messed up. The only constant is my tv, but when I had directv, I could watch it for hours without this audio issue (I just switched to comcast in Nov.) and the netflix audio has been happening since I first signed up for netflix. Thoughts? More info needed?

Edit: Correction- the other constant is my receiver. I have both the htpc and cable box running through the receiver, but I don't use surround sound to watch regular tv or netflix unless I'm watching a movie (which is sort of rare) so it's almost always on standby.

Sounds like an overheating receiver issue. Reinstalling silverlight is probably a placebo, as you're reducing the load on the device just long enough for it to cool off a bit while you reinstall.

I wouldn't think the receiver is overheating if this occurs only when the receiver is on standby and just passing the signal through to the tv, and not while I'm actually using the receiver for surround sound, say during a movie. I only recall this happening when streaming netflix or when using the dvr function. Now that I'm thinking about it though, to rule out the receiver I'll just bypass it altogether and watch something tonight to see if happens or not.

So I connected my cable box directly to the tv instead of the receiver and the audio worked fine. I'm going to test it again tonight to make sure that's the case. If it works, I'll have to look into why the receiver is messing up. If it is a heat issue, what can I do about it? As the receiver sits currently, there's plenty of airflow as I don't have anything but a ps3 sitting next to it.

If the PS3 is too close it could be blocking airflow and adding heat. I don't know about your receiver but mine states in the owner's manual to give it 65cm clearance on top and 40cm on the sides. A receiver should really stand alone. Also make sure it's not dusty.

I'll have to check the receiver manual. It's a yamaha rv365 (I think) so nothing to write home about. Dust is a constant battle though living in the country. I'll take it apart and clean it out and move the ps3.
