Hi folks,
I'm wondering if some of you might be able to give me your opinion regarding what has been happening with one of my machines lately, as I am completely stumped.
Here are the machine specs:
Abit Bh6 running a 450Mhz Celeron (300a clocked to 450).
384mb ram
Maxtor 14 gig HD
Promise TX2 ATA100 controller (with a IBM Deskstar 60GXP 60 gig drive attached)
Diamond Viper v550 TNT1 video card 16 meg (ancient but seems to do the trick)
Network card: D-link DFE-538TX 10/100
Running Windows 98SE
Now here's the problem:
When I install the Diamond V550 drivers so I can use a resolution that is higher than 640x480, after a reboot it seems as if none of my settings are saved and it reverts back to 640x480 (even though I can set it to 1024x768 before rebooting and it seems to work fine). Further, I installed the drivers for my audio card (Echo Audio Gina24) the other day and I power the system on today and my display resolution has been set back to 640x480 and my audio drivers appear to be gone.
I've also tried installed the latest Detonator drivers from NVIDIA, although I am getting some weird display things happening (which is why I tried the regular V550 drivers from Diamond). The detonator drivers cause parts of the icons and text on my screen to go missing. For instance the icon graphics will be corrupted on my desktops, only little bits of the text are readable. It's really quite weird.
I have nothing else installed on this machine (this is in fact my 5th reinstall of Windows) so it's a fresh Windows install. The problems seem to manifest themselves regardless of how many times I re-install the OS clean (like physically deltree'ing the old Windows directory and installing it from a DOS prompt etc). The thing is, I've had this sytem working fine before, it's only after I reformatted my main drive (The 14 gig maxtor) and reinstalled that I seem to be getting all these wonderful problems.
Could it be my graphic card failing? Or something else failing? I've checked my device manager and it reports no conflicts at all. I'm really puzzled. Anyone have any ideas?
I suppose I could try another re-install, but gosh, this is really getting tiring
Thanks in advance for any help.
Ryan.
