The shooting occurred at 17940 Brookhurst St. at about 3:45 a.m., Fountain Valley Sgt. Kevin Thomas said.
Authorities received a call at about 3:15 a.m. from a female in the parking lot who said she had blacked out and did not know how she got there, Thomas said.
"While on scene for the medical aid, officers were approached by a young man approximately in his 20s who was brandishing a knife and had threatened to kill them," Thomas told NBC4. "Shots were fired and the subject is dead at the scene."
Authorities withheld the name of the dead man, pending notification of next of kin.
The woman, a diabetic, was treated for low blood sugar, according to NBC4.
An ambulance attendant was grazed in the back by a bullet, NBC4 reported.
The woman's call and the man's appearance on the scene appeared unconnected, according to broadcast reports.
