Hi! I've read this forum for a long time and I know there's some people with a lot of knowledge on computers so I hope somebody can help me.. BTW sorry for my poor english but it's not my first language.

So here it goes.. yesterday I open my case to put some new fans because my cpu was getting near 60C. I just plug the two fans and reboot my pc.. and then it tells me: "CMOS Bad sum" and also it tells me that I have an Athlon XP 1500+ although I have an Athlon XP 2100+! I've lost 430 mhz!!! WTF! I've tested my cpu with a lot of benchmark programs and they all tell me that it performs as a 1300 mhz processor and not has a 1730 mhz like I have.. i'm really pissed off and I have no idea what might have caused this and what can I do to fix it.. If someone can help me it would really be appreciated..

You da man! Thank you so much! I feel a little dumb that it was this easy.. I was sure I had broken something while installing the fans.. but I feel more happy than dumb so it's all good! Thank you again for the fast answer!

Don't underestimate my brain power! :D But do you have an idea what could have caused this? The only thing I can think of is that when I was installing the fans there was a drop of sweat that fell on the mother board.. other than that I didn't touch anything I swear! :)

So I take it that the wristband to avoid static is a must anytime you do something inside the pc case? BTW my cpu temperature is now 56C at maximum use and at about 47C when idle.. the case temperature is 39C at full use and 35C when idle. Is it too much? I have two fans blowing out at the rear.. one fan blowing in at the front.. one fan near the cpu that is pushing the air toward the two rear fans blowing out.. and I have a fan on the video card and on the cpu.. Should I change something or put more fans? Thanks for your help!

Those temps sound okay to me for a 2100+. How warm is the room?

I was only guessing with the static. Personally, I never use a grounding strap and I've never had a problem, but you never know especially if you have carpeted floors.

The room gets very hot during the summer.. I don't know the exact temperature.. but if you tell me that these temps are ok I trust you! I thank you again for your help and I hope I won't be needing more!

AHhahahahahahahahahahhahahahHAHAHhahahaahahahahhaHAHAHAHahahaha. Sorry.

Some people should read a little more before they build their first computers.

I'm sure I don't have as much computer knowledge as you.. but at least I have better things to do in my life than post stupid ass comments like you just did.

Well, the CMOS bad checksum caused it to be set to "fail safe defaults" which usually makes it 100Mhz FSB. I've had it happen before all of a sudden on my SOYO Dragon, especially after my cpu thermal probe kept dislodging my cpu and I'd have to fix it.

Don't worry about not noticing it either, now you will think of this when it happens. We all learned somehow.

Thanks! It's good to see that most people on this board want to help! I knew that you could change the fsb in the bios but I never thought that just by installing some fans the fsb could somehow be change to 100mhz instead of 133mhz.. but like you said I sure won't forget it!

I wouldn't think it was static either, I ahve never used a strip either and lots of my old motherboards always defaulted to 100mhz FSB when something happended, I remember the first time I saw that and panicked also...So I know where you were coming from.

dont know what the ambient temps are where you live [we have the luxury really of having to worry about it being too hot here in UK!:(] but your case temps seem a tad hot - especially since they are AFTER loading 2 new fans!

i dont really undestand your fan config when you say "1 fan near the cpu is pushing air to the 2 blowing out at the rear"; maybe that fan is causing some turbulence?

maybe switch 1 of your rear fans to a side input if you can fit it there

I know my explications are not very clear.. I will try to draw a little plan of the inside of my case..

Back Front

|......................................|
<Power supply............|
|......cpu...<Fan#3........|
<Fan#2.........................|
|......................................|
|......................................|
|......................................|
|....................................<Fan #1
|......................................|

Ok I know my talent are somewhat limited but it's the best I can do! The problem with my case (Antec SX630-II Mini tower 300W) is that there is no way to way to get the air out or in by the sides.. At first I thought of just leaving it open but I've read it's no good.. So now I thought of putting the fan #3 to push the air to the fans that are blowing it out of the case.. My cpu is between the fan#3 and the back of the case. I have another 80mm fan that I could put in there but i'm not sure where.. I'm hoping someone could give me advices on how to set up my fans cause summer is comming fast and here in montreal it can get very hot, a little too hot sometimes and very humid.

Could also be either a low CMOS battery or, as some motherboards are infamous for, the bios just getting futzed when you power down... I think earlier versions of the ECS K7S5A were particularly notorious for this.
