I just put together a build and I seem to get a weird freezing problem after about an hour of Orthos or sometimes while watching a movie or something.

According to Speedfan, the processor idles at around 40 and gets to upwards of 58 after ten or so minutes running Orthos. This is with the side panel off...CPU temps are a bit high but this shouldn't be the reason for crashing right?

This is what the screen looks like when it crashes: pic

Basically, it's a whole bunch of my desktops resized it seems. If I have music or a movie playing, the speakers will play a really annoying screeching/static noise. I've ripped out the sound card and am running the test again, but I honestly think it might be the northbridge overheating/malfunctioning since I'm using onboard temporarily.

What do you guys think? Would a discrete video card reduce the load on the northbridge enough to reduce temps?

Specs:

Athlon x2 6000+ w/ stock cooler
Gigabyte M61P
4x1gb Micron PC5300
X-fi Xtreme Music
Antec Trio 550w

Looks more like a vid card problem, but would Orthos cause that? I thought that was to test cpu.

Memtest wouldn't hurt.

Yeah, that's weird.

I'm running Memtest86+ at the moment...just cleared test 5 without any problems.

It's integrated video heh. I guess I'll try reinstalling the drivers later tonight.

MemTest just completed with 0 errors.

Its worth running memtest overnite - just to be sure.

But carry on with the reinstalling - do the memtest before beddy byes.

Well, I went out and bought a pci-e video card and ran Orthos again...this time it error'ed out faster than before.
I think it's because the card is covering a bit of the northbridge fan...which I think is the problem. It was extremely hot when I powered off the computer.

Would it be better to replace the motherboard with the same model or just purchase a northbridge cooler?

If you can RMA the mobo, then do that as it does sound a little flaky anyway - but if you get the same problem on the new mobo then try a cooler.

Yeah, I'm going to RMA it and order another (different) one. Thanks for the help.
