I just bought a new Sony Vaio Laptop computer today (PCG-FXA48) and it randomly makes weird clicking noises. It sounds like the hdd. Is this normal? I can still write and delete to the hdd.
Generally an audible clicking noise is not a good thing. It is possible that your HDD could be on its way out. I would suggest a data backup if you don't do one regularly.
Some hard drives do make random clicking sounds as they park the heads a bit too often. Hitachi is one of the worst offenders, with their larger drives sometimes clicking so loud that they distrubed others around them. There was a firmware update released for this...although I don't know if the issue affected anything other then dells. You could always pull the HDD out of the laptop to check the manufacturer.
