Weird cd-rom problem, please help!

Ok, I have a creative 52X cd-rom and I've had it for about 3 weeks and it worked fine until now. When I install things it goes extremely slow and when I play games anytime it gets to a part where it reads from it, it becomes extremely slow and choppy. But when I play regular music cd's they run perfect. Could it be defective? It worked fine for 3 weeks. The rest of my system specs are:

pIII 800
tyan trinty 400
128 MB pc100 RAM (generic)
TNT2 Ultra (32MB)
SB Live Value
