weird cd-rom issue with cossacks game

With the program freshly installed the cd-rom win you hit play will flash a screen that says safedisc then the cd-rom repeatively will speed up and down...It will never start and task a ctrl-alt-del to stop...

Anyone heard of this...This is a friends computer and they are running win me...

I haven't tried disc on my system yet, but I have benched the cd-rom with several cd-rs and normal cd-roms and no other issues arise...

I don't think it has anything to do with hardware and everything to do with sotfware...m,y guess though...
 
Well I tried it on my system with my dvd-rom and the safe disc screen is evidently common...except it should only last a few seconds and then continue on....

Is there a chance his drive may not be able to read safe disc cds....maybe needs a firmware upgrade????
