See rig below.

OK I have all PATA equipment.

2 x seagate 160MB HD on IDE 1
1 DVD burner NEC 3500 something, master IDE 2
1 CD burner Cydene something, slave IDE 2

I can't even install OS (from dos) with Cydene attached tried 3x and get error. Wants SP2 which is already on CD disk. When I insert it in DVD same problem.

I am sucessful when I disconnect Cydene though.

Also in windows, everything's veeeeeeeeery slow while Cydene connected. Problem goes away when disconnected...

IDE problems? Controller problem? bad drive?

Could the IDE cable be flaky? Or maybe the mobo is forcing PIO mode on it at POST?

Yes. I think this is the problem. Why would it destroy performance and have read error on both drives when trying to insall windows?

(already swapped 3 cables so I know that's not it)

Maybe the Cenedyne has an inferiority complex from being paired up with an NEC 3500  I've seen people fix their optical issues just by swapping the Master/Slave jumper settings on the two opticals, too... could try that, I guess. Does the Cenedyne act up even if it's the only optical drive (NEC disconnected)?
