I recently had a asus a7v266 mobo with amd athlon xp 1.8ghz 2200 processor that occasionally on startup had a very loud buzzing sound coming from who knows where in my computer. Upon restarting I would be in my bios with a msg saying that my system ran at an improper cpu speed and the setting would show my cpu speed underclocked to 1.3ghz. After resetting it back to the proper speed it would work fine. I then recently changed my mobo to dfi lanparty ut nf3 with amd athlon 64 3000 to see if this would fix this problem and also since I had a sata drive sitting around anyway. But again I would get that weird buzzing sound but upon restarting it would start normally instead of going into bios. But the buzzing would happen a lot more frequently that before. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Should I change my power supply?

p.s. I also notice the buzzing would usually happen when I start the computer after I played WoW for an extensive period of time the previous session.

It sounds like you have a failing fan somewhere. The CPU error tells me that it is probably the CPU fan that is going bad, causing your processor to overheat.

It could be something in the power supply, then. Before buying a new PSU, I would take everything out of the system (just unplug/disconnect them) except for your CPU and RAM and see if the problem continues. If it does, then it is most likely the PSU. If not, plug in your video card and try again. Next, plug in the hard drive. Continue with one component at a time until the buzzing returns.

So by the time I put in my video card the buzzing starts does that mean there is something wrong with my video card?

Plus what power supply would you recommend?

Yes, if the buzzing starts when you plug in the video card, I would check the fan on the video card itself. There are several different good quality PSU manufacturers. Many people recommend Antec and they make great stuff but they do cost a little more than other brands.

Even though a fan is new, it might be defective. When it's making the noise put your finger on the CPU fan and see if it stops.

Might be a wire brushing against the fan as well.

Checkk all the other fans. There's at least one in the PSU (two if it's a decent one, and if it doesn't have two you should consider upgrading to a decent PSU like Antec True Power or Enermax), and sometimes there's one on the front intake, or a back exhaust.

Might also be the fan on your video card.
