Weird breathing difficulty...

LordMaul

For the past, say, 2 weeks (max) I've had this weird breathing problem. I know I've had it before, but I don't remember my doing anything to actually fix it (I guess it just kind of went away) but this time it's especially annoying.

The main problem is a feeling of not being able to get enough air. I breathe extremely deep, yet it doesn't feel like its going "all the way down." If I try hard enough, and repeatedly take very deep breathes, I will feel like I got a full breath, sometimes trying hard doesn't do anything. I notice it the most when I try to sleep and I feel like I'm almost suffocating. Throughout the day, I'll suddenly feel deprived of oxygen and have to stop and breathe deeply several times before I feel OK again.

They call this "smothering" or something along those lines, and it seems like it usually goes along with panic attacks or cold/flu, but I'm not experiencing the other issues, AFAIK, that would go along with these afflictions. I also would rule out my current state of fitness.

Anyone else have a similar problem before?

I get that in the summer here in north west Indiana. Its a very industrialized area and we receive ozone alerts alot.I ended up having to get an albuterol inhaler from my doc and it helps immediately.

Well this probably won't help you one bit but I've found that a tendancy to breathe through one's nose combined with a chronic sinus condition that makes breathing through the nose difficult makes for a great case of oxygen deprivation. Yes it's retarded that I suffocate myself slowly on a chronic basis due to my sinus being fvcked up.

I'm trying to lay off the nose spray, since for the reason above, I've been "addicted" for years. I'm sort of curious how many people live on spray; poll worthy perhaps?

..from time to time I would use nasal spray when I would get a cold..and would nearly always end up wit a nose spray jones..I then would just douche one nostral till the other guy stopped jonesing..then finally put the spray down now that I have a spray free nostral..so what do ya know..I'am not the only one wit a spray jones. 😀

This almost seems similar to what you have, being a summer thing. I also know I have allergies, but I'm on meds for them, and it I may have allergy problems and not this difficulty, and vice versa, or both. They don't seem related, and being in a fairly distant suburb of Chicago, I'd say pollution isn't a big issue. 😕

Yeah I have the allergy problem also, ragweed being the main thing that sets me off. You should talk to your doctor about some sort of inhaler because they really do help when you need it.
I ride my bike alot and used to get your exact symptoms after, including the panic attacks. The inhaler helps like a set of brand new lungs and I usually dont even get the symptoms if I take it before excersise or a few times a day as its prescribed for me.

Sounds like some sort of asthma like allergy/humidity/general summer/whatever type thing. I run into it pretty frequently, under similar circumstances. Albuterol is quite the thing, really, except for the fact that the jitters suck.

What he said. I think lactose intolerance can have that symptom also. Try laying off the milk for a day and see if that helps.

Man, I'd go check it out now. I used to have asthma, and its sounds similar. There are other possibilities though (especially if you haven't had these symptoms before), like bacterial infection and what not. Just hit the MD to find out what the real deal is. It could get a lot worse if you wait on it ...

Asthma due to alergies. Very common. I used to get it myself in the winter with dust buildup. I got a couple of those air purifiers though and don't get it anymore.

lol....i thought I was the ONLY one with this....like i know EXACTLY what you mean. I talked to the doctor and they prescribed I take ADvair....that seems to have worked so far. Ppl looked at me really wierd when i would sit there and take deep breaths for no apparant reason...😛

that is the exact symptom i get when i have an asthma attack. i would definatly go to the doctor cause it could becom more serious
