Weird blank message box. (XP-Home)

Hi,

Maybe someone can help me. I have an annoying little problem: whenever I click any of the administrator usernames in the XP login screen, a blank "Yes/No" message box appears. The message box has no title and no text, just the "Yes/No" buttons. And whenever I click any of the limited users in the login screen, a blank message box with only "OK" and the standard information icon appears.

What is causing this? It just started yesterday.

I tried booting into safe mode to see if that changes anything. When I boot into Safe Mode, the box does not appear. However, when I boot into Safe Mode with Networking, the box does appear.

And here's where the plot thickens: when in normal mode, clicking either the "Yes" or the "No" seems to change absolutely nothing. However, when in Safe Mode with Networking, clicking the "Yes" button causes Windows to immediately initiate a shut down, while clicking the "No" allows it to continue starting.

I checked the Event Log. The only irregularity I see is that when I click the "Yes" button in Safe Mode with Networking (which causes a reboot), this error is added to the log:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283649

Specifically, I am getting errors in the 0x070 ? 0x071 and 0xCF8 ? 0xCFF ranges (see the link for an explanation).

I have no idea what to do now.

It's probably not a big deal....just a little message box....BUT ITS ANNOYING THE SNOT OUT OF ME because this is the first time in a long time I've been stumped. Can anyone help me?

Also note: I've cleaned the registry. Nothing that I can see is starting up and causing the box when I log in.

It sounds like a Virus or a Trojan got in ... get a good antivirus & anti trojan program
and run them in Safe Mode ... if all else fails, while not connected to the net,
do a Repair Install of Windows XP .. that should fix it for sure without loss of data

Do this in safe mode:

Download, Install, Update, Run, and Remove all found infections w/ backup with all of the following:

ewido anti-malware

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
McAfee Stinger (stand alone)

Ad-Aware SE Personal

http://www.spybot.info/en/download/index.html
Spybot-S&D

Guide to setting up Ewido = http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/ewidosetup.htm
rstones12 - Ewido Setup

If you have a A/V update and scan with that, if you don't then do the above with ONE of the following: (NOTE: If you are running McAfee or Norton A/Vs then I recommend you dump them for one of the following also)

AVG Free

avast! 4 Home Edition

AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

I guess you guys may be right. Its actually my dad's computer that has the problem, not mine. I've been forcing him to use the limited account and not the admin account hoping that the virus problem would be solved, but it looks like one got in anyways.

It must have infected one of the Windows's standard apps because no unusual process is running.

Can anyone tell me what the exact difference between 'Safe Mode' and 'Safe Mode with Networking' is? As far as I knew, in Networking mode, Windows just loads a few more drivers. Is that correct?

With networking will allow you to connect to the net or another pc thru the network connections
