Weird Bios Issue for DVD burner

So I was doing a clean install of vista with new hardware. I tried booting from the DVD and it kept telling me to insert a bootable disk.

In the BIOS, I saw the burner correctly identified. It is the only IDE device (the hard drive is SATA). Everything was set to auto (detect and access mode). It was noted as the master, which is also correct (jumper set correctly on the drive).

Finally, I changed the access mode from AUTO to LARGE.

The OS would then boot fine and everything seemed to install correctly and work.

But the drive spins faster and is REALLY loud when it stops. It sounds like its breaking.

Any ideas about whats going on? Should I leave it on LARGE?

I've never seen that before. Interesting. I don't think that the speed of the spinning disc has anything to do with the geometry settings that you chose in the BIOS though.

It gets weirder!!!!

So after Vista was up and running I put an install disc in and it wouldn't work.

I reset the bios to "auto" on that IDE channel, and voila...it worked. WTF
