Weird audio problem...

My mobo has 8-channel onboard sound, and I have the Creative FPS2000 4.1 speakers. They're connected to the green and black ports (front and rear) and I can hear sound coming from the rear speakers when configuring the sound in the Asus control panel.

However, I can't get sound from the rear speakers from any other applications, such as Winamp and WMP.

Windows is configured to use a 4-speaker setup, nevertheless I can't hear any sound.

You only get surround sound when you're using applications that support it. Your music software is stereo, so it will only be using the front two speakers. Winamp and WMP don't have any 3d simulation that I know of.

I have ALC650 on here. I'm assuming there's an option in your audio control panel to enable something like "Immerzio sound effects/3d game support." If you enable that and restart, you'll be able to turn on different simulated room acoustics, and your rear speakers will be used for reverb and such. There also might be an option called "stereo Xpander" or something, when that's switched on it seems to play the stereo across the rear speakers a bit.

Even with most 3d games you'll need the Immerzio thing enabled to run multichannel audio (though HL2 and Doom 3 don't seem to).
