Weird AGP 1X ->2X problem with K7M, T-bird, & GeForce2MX

Now this is really weird: I boot up and I?m getting AGP 1X. I reboot and it?s still 1X, no big deal. Now, after about 10 minutes of no computer activity (of course), the system goes into suspend mode. Then, when I wake it up, it?s in 2X!!! I?ve monkeyed with with the Bios, swapped PCI slots, etc. My system: Asus V7100 GeForce2MX, K7M, 700Mhz T-bird, 128MB PC133. Anyone?

Interesting.

I would probably say that you have it set to 1X for whatever reason. Either (a) you want it in 1X because of compatibility problems or (b) you have it forcing 1X when you don't want to.

If you don't have it set to 1X in BIOS, then that's just plain odd. Otherwise, I would guess there's a problem with the system suspend mode and not resetting to your original BIOS settings. Which would be an acceptable error for you.

Personally, I never use suspend. It's not very useful unless you've got a system that needs to vent heat.

Either way, though, I think this could be solved by downloading a BIOS upgrade for the system. If you are forcing 1X and the K7M sets you to 2X after suspend, they probably have it fixed. If not, e-mail them and make sure they are aware of the problem.

If you aren't getting 2X when you are not forcing 1X and a BIOS upgrade doesn't fix it, I guess this could be a problem with your specific motherboard. In which case, if you think the very slight performance decrease is crippling, return the board.

What is really weird is that I have a similar setup with a K7M and a GeForce2 MX and the only way I can get it to AGP2X is to run Powerstrip. All the registry tweaks and performance enhancing dodges in the world won't do it because if the Det.3 drivers detect an Irongate chipset, the AGP is switched to 1X.
