Weight limits on carry-ons for air travel

I hope to do (a bunch of) traveling. I have an as-yet unused passport, just researched an bought my first piece of rolling luggage, a Chester Minima. Have been shopping for a buying some packing cubes. I researched the luggage online, extensively... kinda fun! One maker of a video I watched said that for travel to Europe (it was made 2-3 years ago), there was a 16lb limit for carry-ons! That blows my mind! My Chester Minima weighs 6lb 13oz. Keeping it under 16lb would be a challenge. I was hoping to bring a backpack to shove under the seat in front of me, a Timbuk2 Spire. That weighs 2.5lb empty.

I am used to flying locally, have made some longer trips in the US, don't remember having weight restrictions to worry about, although I suppose there are for checked luggage, which I've done a few times, never had to pay for luggage IIRC.

So, I'm wondering, what kind of restrictions do I have to concern myself with? One reviewer (who's pretty awesome, Sarah Murdoch of Rick Steves' Tours) in a 70 minute video to a big auditorium full of people, said she's gone so far as to remove clothes from her luggage and go in the women's room and layer them thick, even shoving shoes in her pockets, to get around restrictions!

Is it 16lb total weight of your carry-ons for international travel to Europe? Per item? Do such rules apply to other international travels? Do these rules vary from airline to airline? I know that some smaller airlines have tighter restrictions for dimensions for carry-ons, saw that in my online research over the last couple weeks, but other than what I said here, that's all I know. Thanks for info/tips!

I'm leaving Europe today back to the states. I don't think I've ever had a carry-on weighed before. As long as it fits the dimensions they seek it hasn't been an issue I've noticed. My 2c

That's a relief! I can take an under the seat item too, e.g. my backpack?

What airline are you on?

I've never had my luggage weighed to or from Europe. Some minor carriers like the now defunct WOW airlines would weigh bags but major airlines don't. Air travel within Europe is MUCH more likely to weigh bags so something to be aware of (and another reason to take the train if it's convenient and cheap)

Yep or, if space allows, place it in the overhead bin. Trans Atlantic flights tend to have more overhead storage space so it's more of a possibility than on a domestic flight

I really am relieved. I spent a lot of time yesterday just researching online travel electric toothbrushes. The ones I have weigh 4.2oz, even have a 7+oz one, and of course, chargers add another 3-4oz. I bought one online yesterday that uses a single AAA battery. Should come in handy for traveling even if I am not facing weight restrictions. Better to be lighter, of course.

Manual ones are pretty light...

Yes indeed, and I sure know how to use one. Maybe I should try again, but my feeling/thinking after going DC-powered toothbrushs was that they do a better job. Much better. But for weight, yeah, can't beat manual. I'll see what my new AAA powered CVS branded goodie weighs in a few days. I'm guessing 3oz or so, maybe less.

I don't know about Europe but in Asia, there are several Asian airlines that will weight your carry on. I think the limit is 7 kilograms or about 15 lbs or so?

Damn, I carry my entire SCUBA set in a carry-on (aside from my fins as they won't fit). That includes a 6lb steel plate, 4lbs in lead weights, my wetsuit, wing, harness, straps, booties, regulators, snorkel, and mask. It probably weighs like 30-40lbs if I had to guess. I had no clue there are airlines with weight limits on carry-ons.

Yeah, they tend to be shit of the shit airlines like RyanAir, it's like Europe's version of Spirit Airlines IIRC.

They do tend to be picky. Flying out of the US I had SWISS make me check my 55 L backpacking pack, which was only partially filled, because it was "too large". No weighing of anything though, just visual checks from the gate agent prior to starting boarding.
