weight lifting gloves or weight lifting straps?

been getting callouses in my hands from lifting, so i want to use some type of protection for my hands. so which type of hand protection is better? weight lifting gloves or straps?

Straps are for heavy lifts like shrugs, where you cannot hold onto the weight, but you can lift it with your shoulders.

Elastic straps are to support your wrists on heavy presses.

Gloves protect the hands from callouses and give a better grip.

Some golves have built in wraps...

callouses are good!
I just use straps and really only for heavy weight where I don't want the forearms to fail before my back or whatever.

I go with none. They are my battle scars. I cut the callouses off. I rock climb and if my hands are soft they get shredded = no good. OL comp = no gloves also.

I'm at the point where my callouses are pretty thick in the right parts and it protects my hand. They do go softer when I haven't lifted in a while though.

Some OLifters will use straps as they have weaker grips.

Try doing pulls with 150-170kg+ for triples. Some people's grips are weaker then others...

Cut them off. When they start to hurt that is when you have left them too long without cutting them.

Ive noticed that after I stopped using gloves all the time and only used them for heavy lifting, my forearms have become a little bit bigger and my grip has improved. Sure I get calluses but like Koing said, those are battle scars 😉. I voted straps in the poll, they seem to offer the benefit of not only reducing your calluses but also allwoing you to use YOUR OWN strength/grip to do your sets and reps, instead of relying on the grip power that gloves use.

Your dam right they are man!

The type of lifting I do requires a strong grip and I rarely ever use straps. The more I use straps the more it is a crunch imo, and it really messes up the rock climbing and the idea of me being able to handle situations if my grip is failing me...but if you don't care about grip then it is less of a problem. But I'd still recommend people go without and cut their callouses but whatever you want man.

if you deadlift, then callouses are best, but you need to keep
them sanded or cut down flat.

i've used straps only when i forgot to bring my chalk to the gym.

IMHO, gloves are for girly hands, unless you have
bleeding palms.

I have extremely girly hands, and have dead lifted 300 lb for a few reps and have never felt the need for gloves. I found the best way to increase your grip strength is to use an alternating grip..that is, one hand with your palm facing away from you, and the other toward you. Works very well for dead lifts and shrugs..otherwise with a "normal" grip I find the weight slipping before I can max out.

My wife doesn't like the callouses so it's a necessity for me to wear gloves. It's also disconcerting to my daughter if I scratch her skin while picking her up and such.

So, no women in your life = bare hands (for more than lifting! 😀 ).
Women in your life = gloves.

😉 <--note that before flying off the handle, 'roiders! The first two sentences apply to me though.

I use to go bare handed but after witnessing time after time some wankers in the locker room going to the bathroom and not bothering to wash his hands afterwards I've resorted to using gloves 100% of the time.

Gloves. Its my opinion if you cannot hold the weight you shouldn't be lifting it. Work on your grip strength, it will only help you in other exercises (particularly pullups)

Yep, I really agree with Andrew on this. When I started getting callouses on my hands after lifting awhile my wife told me in no uncertain terms that calloused hands on her sensitive parts wasnt going to fly.

She demonstrated by touching my sensitive parts with her exfoliating mitts on, I got the point...quickly.
