weight lifting bench

I need to start lifting again. I used to use a 'machine' type of deal at my apartment complex, but since I bought a house 6 months ago I stopped lifting.

Do the weight bench setups work just as well? Costco has an 'olympic weight bench' on sale for $179.. I'm thinking about getting it. Opinions?

EDIT:

here's a pic:

http://www.3gorillas.com/images/NAUTILUS1.jpg

comes with 205lbs of weights

It seems to go for $250ish online + shipping. Seems like a good deal if this is a good 'design' or whatnot. Costco's lifetime return policy ftw!

EDIT:

awesome!! a girl I'm dating called me while I was at work and asked what I was up to... just told her I was looking at a good weight bench at costco.

come home - and guess what she brought over (in her 96 integra I might add... lol practically on the wheel wells)... the weight bench!! Awesome!! I'm taking her out to a nice dinner tonight, then I'll put it together tomorrow afternoon and I'll let you know how it goes..

EDIT:

okay - this thing is pretty nice. Not quite as nice as what you see in gyms (mainly because of the way the bench slides around) but I have absolutely no fear it will fall apart. Very heavy duty. Putting together was kind of a pain.. and the boxes themselves are HEAVY. word of caution - if you're sliding the bench backrest make sure you AREN'T sitting on it. It seems like you could adjust it.. I pinched the crap of my fingers.

Also - it's huge. It folds up, but is still very wide. It barely fits in my guest room - I may put it in the dining room or garage when it gets cooler outside

Link to product? Or scan?

Weight benches aren't as easy to use as total body machines or whatever they're called. It doesn't feel as natural with a barbell/dumbells as with a machine, but it'll probably work just as well, as long as you stick with it.

...YMMV

dont mind him he consistently gives horrid advice.

Don't forget to check Craig's List and stuff. Its not like this stuff has a shelf life, so I'd imagine you could find a much better deal buying used privately.

However I did get a 300lbs olympic weight set with full size bar & plates new for like $100 a while back, so its not like its that expensive.

Is it only a bench, or does it have other attachments/exercise modalities on it? If it was just a bench I would say no. If it came with weight or attachments, etc. then might be fine.

If you are asking if a bench works as well as a machine/bowflex/etc. then you might need to do some reading up on lifting.

Fine, I'll add a YMMV sticker on there. I prefer a machine to free weights.

Craigslist or garage sales. Weights and weight benches are two things that people LOVE to get rid of. I wouldn't waste $180 bucks on something I could pick up for $20.

it definetely comes with weights - not sure about attachments.

One more vote for Craigslist. I got a sweet olympic weight set complete with bench, bar, and 250 lbs worth of weigths for $100 even.

I'll 2nd or 3rd the garage sale route... I love hitting up garage sales during the summer (something to do to kill a little time on a Friday morning). They're practically giving the things away to get rid of them. Likewise, at a particular weekly consignment auction that I go to, most exercise equipment sells for under $10. Every person who regularly goes to that auction has seen so much exercise equipment, that a seller is dreaming if they think they'll get a good price.
