I want to start working out, but I don't have time to go to a gym. I want to do it at home.

I cna't find any weight benches are here locally except for wal-mart.

I think this is the same one as in-store.. what do you guys that workout think?

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product....dept=4125&path=0%3A4125%3A4134%3A49039

I know it's cheap, but if it gets the job done that I am satisfied.

I will also take any recommendations that anyone might have.. thanks!

smith machine FTW

not as good as free weights but when yo lift heavy weight you need a spotter, with a msith machien you do not and it promotes good form until you can get into a gym and get some serious workouts in

I got one very similar to that from Wal-Mart. I think it was only $80? It's ok, don't try to bench 300 lbs with it because definitely not heavy duty. It folds up nicely and does the job. I've had it for a year and half and am pleased with it. Be sure to tighten up the bolts from time to time, because the do loosen from everday useage. I'd like something beefier than that, but I don't have the room till I find a new house. Good luck!

you can probably find a lightly used one in your
local newspaper for a lot less.

IMHO though, it's well worth it to make the effort to
go to a gym.

I had that weight bench, or at least an earlier incarnate. You get what ya pay for. For being a total n00b to weight lifting it served it's purpose for 2 years but it's hardly hardcore or anything. BTW, that lat tower sucks - make sure you grease it up if you get it because it doesn't exactly slide up and down very easy.

well, I eventually plan on trying to get to the gym. At this point with my 1 1/2 to 2 hours commute and am going to school, I like to be at home as much as I can. Plus my schedule is extremely hectic.

I don't want to become extremely serious at this point either... I want to basically get something that I can get into shape with, and once I'm in decent shape I'll spend the money on something better or to start going to the gym.

But I don't by any means plan on becoming some sort of serious body builder, I just want to be healthy and be somewhat muscular.

Shipping is the main reason that I want to buy something local, even at Wal-mart.com it was $110 for shipping alone. That is crazy and there is no way that I will pay it.

I will check local listings and craigs list and see what's up. I've never used craig's list before so I'll have to see how that goes.

The bench that I listed does not come with weights, and that is another issue that I will have to deal with as well. What weights to get and where.. I don't know what stores carries those either.

Why not just do it for free? Push ups are the best way to build chest muscle, and it evne compares to benching. Now, there are many, many varieties of pushups to hit pretty much every musle in your upper body.

And if you dont believe me, my friend can do 100 push ups in a row. He weighs about ~160, but can bench 315. He's a boxer and doesnt weight train.

Because pushups are boring. You can do 40 and not be tired. Why do 100? Such a waste of time.

I rather bench 8 reps in 3 sets than do 100 pushups.

You do 100 push ups and get back to me. There's a big difference between 40 and 100 in a row. I'm just speaking for my friend though, i can hardly do 20 in a row.

Push ups are good - you don't need anyone to spot for you :D. I used to them in-between days of workouts, right after running a few miles.
The most I could do in a row was about 60 :(

Well being able to do lots of reps doesn't mean you can do a lot of weight and vice versa.

I wouldn't say push ups are the best way of building chest muscle. I would think the person doing the bench press would pack on more muscle then the guy only doing push ups. It is easier to add resistance to the bench press then doing push ups. Yes you can vary the grip and add extra weight on to your back but it easier with weights on the bar.

I can't do a 100 but I can do 75 (really couldn't be motivated to get to 100, even though it was a goal at the time). My bench press isn't great but a lot better then the avg guy.

Dips are a great builder also for your pecs if you can go low enough which I don't see often with people!

That bench set looks alright. It looks very flimsy so I wouldn't load it with a lot of weight say 250lbs+ but I wouldn't think you would be doing that just yet so you are good to go :)

My .02 in this is to avoid the crappy cement weights at all costs. Pay the few extra bucks and get real metal weights

imho i would go with something closer to this:

Text

or just get a flat bench that you can incline. Then get some dumbbells and do dumbbell presses, you will get a good freakin workout from that.
