WEGA won't remember 16x9 mode :(

My mom bought herself a 32" Sony WEGA from a friend that was moving out of the country and I got it all set up for her. Everything works like a charm, but we can't seem to get it to remember to use the 16x9 Enhanced Mode after you set it in the menu. I'll have it set to the component inputs for DVD and get it all working right, but if you turn the TV off and then on again or cycle the inputs, it goes back to freaking 4:3. Am I missing some way to make it remember the setting?

As a note, we don't have the original remote and are using our "universal" remotes from our Sony VCR and DVD players. the DVD remote has a "wide mode" button for TV's but it doesn't work (and neither do the channel buttons, although the power, volume, and TV/Video buttons work).

There is no way for it to remember the setting, you must reset it every time.

Plus you wouldn't want it to remember, since not all DVD's are anamorphic.

yeah but i'd rather have to change it back to 4:3 for the extremely rare DVD that isn't wide screen than have to change it nearly every time. but thanks for answering, now i feel better that i couldn't figure out how to make it better.

there's no way my mom is going to be messing with those menus, so she'll just have to make do with 4:3 letterboxed.

You talking about the Anamorphic Squeeze thing? I think only the XBRs can automatically do it.

Most are 16:9 but now an increasing are kept to the original cinema aspect ratio. Can't remember it off the top of my head :(

I'm in the UK though but would imagine the USA market to have more 16:9 material, but you guys have a lot more 4:3 biger 40+ RPTV. Very uncommon in England due to smaller houses and UK doesn't like RPTV.....

Get her a remote that allows her to configure macros.

Also you'll probably find that:

1) She won't notice the difference in quality and
2) She won't be able to tell if the aspect ratio is wrong

I frequently find people watching anamorphic movies on my Wega without 16:9 mode turned on, they don't seem to notice.

16:9 mode has nothing to do with the actual aspect ratio of the DVD, it's just the vertical compression mode that allows anamorphic DVD to be displayed correctly (and with 33% greater vertical resolution).

16:9 is the tallest of the "widescreen" modes, so all other widescreen aspect ratios will fit on a 16:9 shaped window (just with horizontal black bars).

what are you tryin to do? make 16:9 movies show as 4:3 or vice versa? or are you just trying to make them keep their original aspect ratio? my dvd player has a setting for which kind of tv you have. I have mine set to 4:3 so when I play a 16:9 dvd it automatically puts the borders.

right, and this is what it was set to originally, with her old TV. but the WEGA's have a setting that squeezes the resolution of the TV vertically to make a 16:9 picture. when combined with 16:9 output from the DVD player, this means you essentially get a widescreen picture without the quality loss you get with 4:3 and black bars. you still see black bars but the TV doesn't waste precious resolution on them.

the difference in quality is noticable, and even my mom could tell the difference. but she definetely notices the difference when the aspect ratio is wrong. i think the best solution is to just live with the lost quality in 4:3/letterboxed mode. a macro remote wouldn't help much because there's no way to input the commands without the original remote. when i'm there, i can set it to the better setting and then back again, but other than that they can either live with the reduced quality or learn the menu sequence.

personally, i can't stand it when the aspect ratio is off. i have a friend with a widescreen HDTV. i went to watch a movie at his house and he had the DVD player set to 4:3, interlaced! the tv wasn't even doing the edge-stretching thing. it was just stretching the whole picture, but he had no idea, and even when i pointed it out, he didn't believe there was anything wrong with the picture. it looked like complete garbage. i got it set to the proper 16:9, progressive, and he couldn't believe how much better it looked. but even edge-stretching is the devil. i don't see how people can stand it when character's foreheads are stretching grotesquely to the side like they have some kind of bulging brain tumor. give me side bars or give me death! ;)
