I picked up a 32" Sony Wega TV (non-HD) over the weekend (after I returned a Philips 30" widescreen I was unhappy with).

I hooked up the cable and wasn't too impressed with the picture quality on some channels. Some look great, while others don't look too well. The colors seem to "bleed" in places and the edges aren't as sharp as expected. The picture looks great on DVDs using the S-video input, though.

I hooked up digital cable to the set (using RCA cables) and the picture even looks slightly worse compared to coax.

For those of use that like the Wega, what general video settings do you use? I tried all the presets (Standard, Vivid, Pro, and Movie), but they weren't too good and tweaking them didn't seem to help.

I've been reading about the Avia and Video Essentials calibration DVDs...are those worth it?

I have the HD one and it took a little to get used to the fuzyness of satellite on it... now DVDs look stunning... I have not yet tested out the HD capabilities of that TV... now on satellite, some channels, especailly the movie channels look pretty decent, the worse are commercials though.... the best is cartoons and Anime... :)

I remember reading a while back about how there were a lot of Wegas that shipped from the factory with the color set too red. There was a webpage with a sequence of keys you could hit on the remote to access a service menu or something to correct it. That might help, I don't know.

Yeah, I've read a good bit about the service menu, but thought it might have been something more obvious. This is my first Sony set, but apparently they are known their "Red Push"...ie, the color set too red.

Ouch, sorry :( You'll know what this means in a year or two when you're trying to get in touch with customer service to get your TV fixed.

Talking about straight up Coax connection in the back? If so good chance its the cable and interference, not much you can do... they'll come out and put filters/traps, but it usually doesn't help, could ask them to bump the amp on the signal as well if possible. If its from a digital cable box (RCA or S-Video) then i dunno, muck with the settings... isn't that half the fun a of new TV? My 27" Wega looks fine, I don't expect too much from extended basic cable... DVDs rule, i love the 16/9 squishy it does... btw where's the component video for your DVD! A waste of your Wega :p

Edit: F for reading comprehension, see that you are on the Digital cable box... if you can't change the settings to get rid of the bleeding its usually the signal... complain up a storm, and make sure its a free Tech visit :D

Yeah, I'm thinking it might have something to do with the cable signal. I moved into the house last month, and immediately noticed more irregularities with the cable like horizontal lines compared to my previous apartment.

Why were you unhappy with the Philips?

As for the Avia and Video Essentials question, I have a question for you first. Were you happy with the picture playing DVD's? You say it look great, so I'd say so. This being the case, I'd say that Avia or VE would be a waste of money for you. Sure, you may see some improvement using it, but it will be very little, if you see any at all.

Did you use the component input at all? It doesn't sound like it in your post, if so why not?

As for you cable woes, there's a saying that goes garbage in, garbage out. And cable for the most part is garbage. Why didn't you get an HDTV set? You could of gotten HDTV through your cable provider. At least then some of your channels would look fantastic.

Well, I found out the hard way with the Philips 30" Widescreen and non-HD channels. I didn't do my research and found out the following 2 things:

1) Non HD cable on a HDTV looks like crap
2) Comcast doesn't offer HD in my area and won't for another year. (small town Mississippi). :(

So that explains why the Philips set went back, and we decided on a larger, non-HD TV.

Maybe I was just spoiled by the HD signals on all the sets at the store...and yes, new component cables are on the way.

OK, I get it now. I can't help but feel that you will regret your choice in a year though. How far are you from your local stations? Is OTA out of the question?
