Time must have gotten stuck sometime the last six months, but it did suddenly Spring Forward last night, by an entire hour, in my location. I think my Boss is behind it all...just one more way to cut my weekend short. ;)

I have decided to discontinue the weekly project highlight....I realized just how little I know. :) In fact, I have a question instead. Anyone know which GPU apps prefer double precision? I know of Milkyway, Einstein, some PrimeGrid (which ones?), and in development, Universe. EDIT: Einstein is now single precision. Sorry.

Tony.

Thanks go, as always, to the folks responsible for Free-DC, who make this possible by keeping score for us.

In the event we have any non-crunching AnandTech readers who happen to wander into this thread:

Distributed Computing is where you allow your computing device (smartphones/tablets included) to work on things like medical research, mathematical stuff, sifting through telescope data to further the field of Astronomy, and many other 'citizen science' projects. It allows networked computers to band together to act as a supercomputer.

And you should join us.

Thanks for the stats, Tony :)

EDIT: how soon will the Universe GPU app be ready? (here I am moving it to 5M with CPUs, oh well)

DC Vault's WCG slot is showing team "Anandtech" at rank 404, instead of "TeAm AnandTech" at rank 63. :confused2:

Thanks, Tony! I like your question. I've been having good fun looking for older AMD cards to run, even though they are a bit power hungry, they are easy on the wallet, and to me there is something pretty cool and maybe even a bit elegant about cards that do double precision well.

Thanks for the stats
PrimeGrid genefer app is heavily Double Precision
Also the R9 280x seems the best for FP64 since its 1/4 of FP32

TeAm AnandTech is the real team. Anandtech is a very old remnant of a time when we had two team captains ... We tried to contact the other, but he was not available and not possible to reach ... so that team remains.

Always thought Einstein was a DP project too. Soon as I hit 100m in MW I'll hop back over to this project.

Is the requirement for DP or SP a consequence of the calculations themselves, or the way the software is written to perform them?

I believe I understand it to be how the the software calculations are written. But the correct hardware has to be used to process it efficiently, or it takes longer to do the do calculations. In a nut shell.

The choice to use single precision or double precision lies in the hands of the author of the software, and which they choose to use is dependent on how precise they want their results to be. Milkyway is double precision out of necessity, because the slightest of errors will be magnified thousands and thousands of times when they extend that vector from one star to another one 100 light years away and try to calculate it's trajectory 1000 years into the past.

Other projects such as Folding, say they can predict the margin of error and compensate somehow, for single precision errors. I guess such projects only need to get a rough idea of what they are looking for, then they can refine that result with further calculations.

On the hardware side, I have no idea how it works, but a sold-out-everywhere GTX 1080Ti has SP/DP ratings of 10608/332 GFLOPS. Whereas the ancient Radeon 7970/280X gets trampled with a SP of only 4096 GFLOPS, it's DP is 1024 GFLOPS. More than triple Nvidia's latest and greatest. :D The last of the great DP cards, that series is.

But if you're willing to spend the money, the Pro cards have much better DP then their consumer counterparts. Nvidia rules there with the $10,000 P100 GPU Accelerator, having an insane SP/DP output of 10609\5304 GFLOPS. The best value, if it works for BOINC though that I've found, are used FirePro cards, the S9150 (Hawaii based chip) can be found for about $600 and has a DP of 2530 GFLOPS. I have one on the way. :D I'll keep you updated on if it works with DC or not, but it should. Drawback there is that it is made for servers, and is passively cooled, I'm going to have to use cardboard and Duct tape to attach a funnel and a 120mm fan to it somehow, lol.

I thought Tahiti was higher DP than Hawaii, or is it really suped up for the server?

DP:SP on consumer Hawaii is limited to 1:8. On server and workstation Hawaii it is 1:2.

(Edit: whereas Tahiti is enabled to 1:4 on consumer, server and workstation.)

@TennesseeTony If DP is not the factor in Einstein work units, do you know why or have a guess why your 280x rig is out performing the 1070 rig, both with dual cards. Is there any rhyme or reason?

I only switched the 1070's (Mjolnir) to Einstein yesterday, but I'll keep an eye on it. The twin 280X rig (Skeletor) has many hundreds of pending validation tasks to help boost it's score as well, while Mjolnir is still building up steam.

Looking at my account page, I did notice some very interesting things though:
  1. WUSS (single 280X) had about a 50% invalid task rate. :( I put it back on Milkyway to see if it's still of some use there.
  2. The Nvidia cards use the CPU 1000 to 1200 seconds per task (running 3 concurrent tasks on all machines), whereas the 280X cards only need help from the CPU 300 to 400 seconds. That is 3 to 4 times more CPU usage for CUDA. Looks like Nvidia card performance may be directly related to CPU performance.
  3. Last, I noticed that I have at least 1,500,000 points pending, and I only checked half of the machines. :D
EDIT: What!? I think I see why you asked now, the 1070's seem to take about 1850 seconds on average (for the first page of results), whereas the 280X's only take about 1650. Well, that doesn't make sense.

OH! ...I spend an hour or two gaming on Mjolnir per day on weekends. :D

Edit #2: I think I found the root cause...I forgot to allocate more CPU when I started on Einstein. I remembered to save some threads on the server chips, but forgot to do that to Mjolnir. No wonder my game would freeze up for a few seconds at a time, 100% CPU load.

I've been reading the Einstein forums about this. Granted it is mostly a SP project, but some calc are DP. And if I understand it correctly if the gpu isn't proficient at with DP it has to reference back to the CPU. I didn't have the 280's last time i was crunching Einstein, so I looked at you guys that are. You have monster setup that's is a great reference!

Thanks for the stats
PrimeGrid genefer app is heavily Double Precision
Also the R9 280x seems the best for FP64 since its 1/4 of FP32

From Michael Goetz-One thing to remember is that ONLY GFN 21 and GFN 22, amongst all the apps at PrimeGrid, still use double precision. All the other GFN apps, as well as AP27 and PPS-Sieve, do not use double precision at all.

Interesting.

Interesting indeed. Michael Goetz's post which you cited goes on to explain that even GFN-21/22 can fall fall back to single precision, and, depending on the instruction set offered by a particular GPU, might never even touch DP.

In fact, PrimeGrid's GPU leaderboard show several NVIDIA cards with weak DP beating AMD's Hawaii and Tahiti despite their strong DP support at GFN-21 and GFN-22.
