Good (insert time of day you are viewing this here) !!!

It is good to have everyone back with us this week, and I hope everyone is doing well.

As a quick recap of last week's thread topic, SpaceX has very successfully completed Demonstration Mission One, flying their new crew capsule up to the ISS, docking, hanging around for a few days, undocking, de-orbiting, and finally soft landing (via parachutes) with impressive accuracy just off the US coast in the Atlantic, where it was quickly recovered. This particular capsule (and the first stage rocket that delivered it) will both be reused quite soon, in June perhaps, which will be an inflight abort test just as the vehicles go supersonic (the worst case scenario for an abort). Then Demo Mission 2 is scheduled for July, in which humans will be inside.

Back to DC: This week we have had the second PrimeGrid Challenge of the year, the Year of the Pig Challenge, and I am going to go ahead and proclaim 4th place, with about 6 hours to go. :) Well done TeAm! Especially well done to our top TeAm-mates, one top ten, 3 in the top 20, 6 in the top 60, out of 330-ish participants.

The Holiday Meals with family have finally caught up to our challenge calendar, look how fat it is now! ;) - Tony

In the event we have any non-crunching AnandTech readers who happen to wander into this thread:
Distributed Computing is where you allow your computing device (smartphones/tablets included) to work on things like medical research, mathematical stuff, sifting through telescope data to further the field of Astronomy, and many other 'citizen science' projects. It allows networked computers to band together to act as a supercomputer.
And you should join us.
Thanks go, as always, to the folks responsible for Free-DC, who make this possible by keeping score for us.

Thanks for the stats, Tony!

Asteroids had no work for about 8 days, which is why there weren't any new points last week. It is back up and running now, though.

Hey TN Tony, I'm making a push on GPUGrid with the intention to push the team well into second place. Everybody come join while Pablo and Adria are keeping the pipeline full of WUs.
For CPU projects I'm working TN-Grid now. With a little a help we could take first place (now 8th) in RAC and with persistence we could exceed 5th place in Total Credit.
What CPU project would folks like to focus on???

There only seems to be 6 TAs at NFS. Ok, this once I'll do math. Come Sunday let's own TN-Grid.
My priorities are:
1. Life Sciences.
2. Physics, astronomy & cosmology.
3. Climate. (May become 1st if someone actually gets one working.)
4. Math.
Banned: The Collatz Conjecture. Their approach is wrong and the project is a complete waste of electricity.

Hi @Aurum ! I hope you'll tell us a little about how you came to have such an impressive computing fleet, it's probably a supercomputer all on its own! Have you participated in Formula BOINC? Right now many of us are doing the Numberfields@Home Sprint. I keep getting it confused with NFS... We are only in fifth this year, the competition in League 1 has become intense!

Somehow I missed part of the gist of Tony's and your posts, so pardon my redundancy, I'm operating on a severe sleep deficit.

No no no no no! Not NFS, NumberFields. :) I get those mixed up as well! :D

Hey TN Tony, I'm making a push on GPUGrid with the intention to push the team well into second place. Everybody come join while Pablo and Adria are keeping the pipeline full of WUs.
Yep, GPU Grid is going well lately. I've been making great strides the past two weeks, nearly 1M PPD with just a 1060 3GB and a 750Ti! I just have to make sure not to get a PABLO KIX on my 750Ti.

Banned: The Collatz Conjecture. Their approach is wrong and the project is a complete waste of electricity.
Interesting. How is their approach wrong? I came close to using their approach on PrimeGrid PPS Sieve once; but I found a faster way.

However bad it is, it surely doesn't compare to the project I ban, Wanless Mersenne +2.

R.D. Silverman said:
The "method" is no better (quite a bit worse actually) than just
selecting a random integer less than N and computing its GCD with N.
This is an O(N^(1+epsilon)) algorithm; much worse than trial division.

That project just keeps finding one trivial, known factor over and over, and has for over a decade.

No no no no no! Not NFS, NumberFields. :) I get those mixed up as well! :D
Yeah, NumberFields is easy. NFS takes huge amounts of RAM - so much that I can't use all the cores on one machine.

.........Come Sunday let's own TN-Grid.......

I believe you will have some takers on that, based on task availability....

I personally will have to get back to WCG-Tuberculosis and push for my 10 year badge before the project ends. IF I can get tasks, it shouldn't take me but 48 hours or so....

Yep, GPU Grid is going well lately. I've been making great strides the past two weeks, nearly 1M PPD with just a 1060 3GB and a 750Ti! I just have to make sure not to get a PABLO KIX on my 750Ti.

Interesting. How is their approach wrong? I came close to using their approach on PrimeGrid PPS Sieve once; but I found a faster way.

However bad it is, it surely doesn't compare to the project I ban, Wanless Mersenne +2.
That project just keeps finding one trivial, known factor over and over, and has for over a decade.

When I look at a math DC the first thing I want to find is what mankind might do with the solution. Does it have an applied use or is it just the musings of pointy headed mathematicians.
I just looked at up what Marsenne Primes are on Wolfram and Wikipedia. Not one single mention of an application for Marsenne Primes = Banned. It looks like folks have been having fun chasing MPs since time immemorial.

As I recall, when I read what they had to say about the Collatz Conjecture I saw nothing about useful applications = Banned. Then I read their method and it seems they're trying to prove a negative by testing every possibility. To think of all the good that could be done with all that misguided computer power.
