Weekly DC Stats - 20MAR2022

Hi all,

last week, several of us did of course continue to contribute to team Ukraine in a few projects — among them SRBase because this was selected for a Formula Boinc sprint. The FB sprint projects are neither announced to contestants nor to project admins, hence there is always a possibility that the project can't carry the load of such a sprint for one reason or another. But in this particular case, the SRBase server seems to manage (server stats timeline from @Kiska's tracker). The sprint will end at 20:00 UTC today, 11½ hours from now. Team Ukraine is currently holding the top spot, with support from individuals from various teams.

In our own TeAm stats, I am seeing another strong turnout from the past week at Folding@home. The other medical GPU-based project, GPUGrid, had one of its brief moments of work availability, and a few of us jumped on that.

In the upcoming five days, several of us will surely be busy testing 3*2^n±1 numbers for primality in PrimeGrid's "World Water Day Challenge". As a reminder, for points in this challenge, the 321-LLR subproject needs to be selected (CPUs only, with multithreading support), work must be downloaded after Monday March 21, 03:21 UTC = today, Sunday March 20, 23:21 EDT, 20:21 PDT, and results reported before Saturday March 26, 03:21 UTC = Friday March 25, 23:21 EDT, 20:21 PDT.

As mentioned last week, my rig's offline for the time being. Unfortunately, also no progress on my "no more money for Russian gas!!!" project, as I've been hit by Covid-19 (had to postpone my appointment with the heating contractor to next week). So, I'm also offline myself

Good thing I've had my three shots (or jabs as @Assimilator1 would say

) already, so I'm not troubled too much by it. But it really makes one feel sort of weak, even little things are suddenly exhausting. But I'm starting to feel better.

Also, hopefully your isolation doesn't take too long.

It's hard to avoid infection currently here in Germany. I am glad that I can keep my own exposure minimal with relatively little effort (e.g., I haven't got school kids), as I rather don't want to catch it despite vaccination.

As mentioned last week, my rig's offline for the time being. Unfortunately, also no progress on my "no more money for Russian gas!!!" project, as I've been hit by Covid-19 (had to postpone my appointment with the heating contractor to next week). At least around me, in the US, everyone who was vacinnated and caught it, only had it for a couple of days. One person 4 days, its like having a cold.

Milkyway@home has had to replace a hard drive in their RAID 5 array recently. It's been causing all sorts of issues the past couple of weeks. The new drive has been placed in the array as of a few days ago and due to it being a live server the rebuilding process has been taking a lot longer than usual. This has caused pendings to skyrocket as the server hasn't been able to keep up with the demand. Given the circumstances it's not unusual. Just give it some time for MW@Home server to catch up. One of the admins there has been active daily on reporting the progress and babysitting the server to help it get back to normal operation.

Should I shut down the project for now? I'm worried all the pendings well end up invalid (wasted energy).

There is no "deadline" on the pendings to get validated. They're on the server and just waiting for them to get validated. The chances of you not getting credit for them is slim to none.

What kind of GPU are you running on MW@Home anyway?

I looked up your two computers on the MW site. A W4100 and a Vega GPU. I think those two GPUs would be utilized better at a different project. Milkyway@Home relies heavily on FP64 compute which neither one of those GPUs do very well anywy.

Seems the Vega does about 1 minute per task while the W4100 does around 850 seconds (14 minutes) per task. Which means the Vega is probably okay at running them, but the W4100 should be moved to something else. Also noticed you run a lot of CPU tasks. Highly inefficient on MW@Home. I'd switch the CPUs to a better suited CPU project.

Click edit preferences
uncheck cpu
click update preferences

Now MW@Home will stop sending you CPU work. You can let the current work finish on the CPUs or abort them. Aborting them lets the server know you no longer intend to do them and they'll be ready to be resent out. Not a big deal.

Then when you join another project, preferably one that's CPU only it'll only download CPU work on that project. If the project also has CPU work, then unchecking Use ATI GPUs" on that projects preferences will prevent GPU work from being sent to them on that project.

I'm back and feeling good. Overall, the variant I was infected with wasn't too bad (combined with the vaccination). But still, I don't need this again.

My son had basically no symptoms at all, but was positive for 7 days (we tested daily). I had symptoms for almost 2 weeks, and were positive for 13 days. My wife was positive for 9 days, and still has symptoms. Everybody is vaccinated at least twice (my son twice, we adults thrice).

Well seems they took MW offline completely now. Perhaps they're going to let the server validate the large backlog of tasks offline and let the new hard drive rebuild itself into the RAID array.

Hopefully they leave it offline until all of that is complete.

Evidently, availability of a storage system is not that great if it consists of disks in RAID-5 configuration. I am not operating RAIDs myself, but from what I read already some years ago, mirrored schemes are the way to go nowadays if availability is desired (and disks required).
