Weekend trip in WI or northern IL. Give me your ideas

I am planning on just getting away with the wife Friday afternoon - Sunday evening in a couple of weeks. Trip must be withing the $500's that I've saved for it. Any ideas? I was thinking of Door County, but that could be out of the budget, unless we camped. (Which would be ok, if anyone knew of some good campsites)

Cheers, thanks for the suggestions. Hoping some people from these areas can help me out. 😀 (read, Mogul promised his wife a getaway trip, but forgot to plan it)

Peninsula State Park is a really nice campground with trails, swimming, etc... However, it is likely booked as most weekends are booked very early in the season. It's still worth a shot. Whitefish Dunes State Park is another cool place that is in the same area - you might be able to get a site there.

Door County is cool but it is not cheap at all. There are no national chains there at all. No motel chains, no mcdonalds, no pizza huts, etc. Camping would have to be the way to go. It was beautiful when I was there and it was worth it.

High Cliff and Devil's Lake are probably the best two campsites in WI. I go there quite often. High Cliff is right on Lake Winnebago by Appleton so there's plenty to do around there. Devil's Lake has it's own lake for swimming and such as well.

But if you hear north to Door County, I'm not sure about campsites up there but I know there are a ton.

Thanks, Franky. I may check that out. Are those state parks? I have a WI state park sticker, so I could camp for free if they are.

Bonus would be that I could visit my sis in Oshkosh.

Door County Rocks! Its the end of the tourist season too, so it should be a lot cheaper

Yeah, we had our honeymoon there, but it was in the off-season. Saved $1200 on the weekly rate, over peak season.

Looks like Door County. Taking my parents camper, to cut down the costs. 😀 Its going to be ~$50 for the campground, and I figure another $150 in food and liquor. Should be beautiful up there this time of the year, too.

Why not head up to galena and check that out? there is plenty you can spend the day doing there...

Dubuque/Galena area? Lots of little shops in Galena to walk around in. Dubuque has Eagle Point Park which is cool to go to and see the birds pluck fish out of the lock and dam. Dubuque also has some very cool victorian homes and historic buildings to look at. The Dubuque/Galena area also has several very nice bed and breakfasts to stay at.
