if you stay there just dont ask the dude mumbling in the hotel lobby bathroom who nimrod is.
you might not like the answer.

the karaoke in the BW mardi gras hotel bar kicks ass too.

Sounds like you need to get rated. Then get comp'ed.

Other than that. Did you need to go on the weekend dates? What about Sunday through Wednesday nights?

if you have to go those dates, i see the following conventions in town that may be jacking up your rates: (i only picked the larger conferences/events. the last number indicates the number of expected attendees.)

INDUSTRIAL FABRICS ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER 10/03/2007 10/05/2007 9,000
METALCON INTERNATIONAL LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER 10/03/2007 10/05/2007 8,000
INTERNATIONAL VISION EXPO SANDS EXPO CENTER 10/04/2007 10/06/2007 16,000
BOOMERS SHOW SANDS EXPO CENTER 10/06/2007 10/07/2007 10,000

just searching for events, i saw there is also a fight on october 4th but it's at the hard rock.

also found that jay leno, dennis miller, david copperfield, new found glory are all playing vegas during that time.

on october 6th, andre agassi is having his charity event with several notable guests at the MGM grand.

There's a dedicated LV thread at fatwallet.

Personally, I've only gone at times when there are $40-60 rates from MGM Grand, Monte Carlo, &c (off-peak weekdays, obviously).

Actually, that's not true. I went around xmas once. I liked how minimal and fleeting the "holyday" nonesense was.

South Point is nice, but sorta far from the action. Palace Station is in the ghetto, far from everything, and the rooms are old and filthy. Primm (on the state line) is like 40 minutes away, but if you don't get wasted, could be a fun alternative to staying in Vegas. And beware of any place with "Suites" in the name, that's where all the freaky-deakies live.

P.S. the last week of October is dead here, you can get rooms at places like the Orleans for like 50 bucks.

Between $200-500 on Friday and Saturday nights for most of the hotels on the Strip. And even the smaller motels are charging steeply. Guess i might just have to take my long drive to another destination. I really didn't want to have to pay more than $150 per night for a nice hotel.

just for the weekend!?

park in casino parking lot. sleep for a couple of hrs.

That's exactly what I did. Stayed Sunday through Thursday at the Orleans. Even Thursday was expensive, but I bit the bullet. Could afford to stay another day, didn't plan it out, but wasn't willing to pay Friday's rate regardless. So we ended up sleeping in the car in the parking lot for a few hours. I'd rather spend the money on fun and games than for a few hours nap at the hotel. We showered right before we left the hotel on the last day's stay at the hotel, so it was bearable hygeine wise.

Driving instead of flying saved us some money as well. 2 person ticket would've been $1000Cnd. Round trip gas charge was only $400Cnd from Calgary, 24hr straight drive. Total we spent on the trip was only about $1500. Not bad I'd say.

Hey we should get together for some drinks. :)

Anybody else going there that weekend?

Wow, sleeping in a car and a 24-hr drive each way. Sounds like my idea of a vacation...:Q
