OK, I just got my Duron 700 in. I remember seeing a page that broke down what each part of the markings on die mean. I can't seem to find that page. So, I am just going to post the markings and you tell me. :)

AMD Duron
D700AUT1B
AKBAR0040VPMW
(c) 1999 AMD

I am guessing it's a week 40. am I right? thanks

that's what I thought. thanks for confirming it. now does the fact that I have a week 40 duron 700 actually mean anything significant? :)

It should hit >950. My week 34 will run 1G at about 38C full load, but not real stable.

The fact that it is a week 40 means that you are going to get yours a lot faster than my week 24. Have fun. You should have no issues getting to 900, or maybe even 1G+.

Lucky bastard.... I guess this is waht you get for waiting. :)

I got it from tcwo. :) I was surprised to say the least.

Just screwing around with it now, I was able to post at 800. Didn't want to go much higher until I get the rest of the case fans installed. Plus I only had the vid and ram installed. No Hard Drive or floppy. I need to migrate most of my current system to the new one. Still backing up stuff. :) No point in trying higher until I get the rest together....

One thing I did notice was that the temp went to about 52 C measured in the BIOS. The only thing running was the BIOS setup screen. This was at both 700 and 800. I have an FOP32-1. I left the pink pad on the CPU. Should I put thermal grease on it instead?

I am getting a couple of 80mm case fans that are 2700RPM. That will help increase airflow.

If the pink pad is an actual pad, you should replace it with thermal grease. Thermal pads rarely perform as well as thermal paste.

There have been a few threads awhile back explaining how to take the pink pad off. But your CPU shouldn't be getting that hot I don't think. Mine is a Duron 700 and it is about 46C in Windows at 1000mhz.

And I don't think week number is everything. My Duron is a week 19, which is very early, and look what it overclocks to. :)

wasn't there a bios that reported higher temps than it was supposed to? I don't know what bios I have, I'll check when I get home.... I assumed it was the UL BIOS because the Duron booted up fine, but I could be wrong. I didn't think to check it...

Just remembered, I never said what board I am using. It's the KT7 (non RAID).

T-Bird and Duron temps are never accurate. My T-bird 1.1Ghz on a KT7 is 33C idle 48C load. It all depends on were the probe is connected. Newer A7V has the probe under the socket, but it doesn't touch the CPU like the KT7. My friend's T-Bird 900 shows 50C idle. I don't think any MB measure AMD temps properly. If your system is crashing, then it's too hot.
About the week and oc-ability, it's still the luck of the draw. Certain weeks can give you a higher percentage of getting lucky, but there will still be a bad week 37 or bad week 40. I have 4 durons, 2 week 27, 2 week 37. 1 week 27 hit 950 the other only 850. Both my week 37 hit a gig (I bought them guaranteed). Week 37 is supposed to be a good week but I just made sure by buying it guaranteed.
I'm running a Duron 1.05Ghz on A7V older revision, with the thermal probe. So the temp depends on where I placed the probe. The closer I get it to the CPU the more "accurate". But it still never measures the core temperature. My temps read 42C idle 49C load. Does it really matter as long as all my apps and programs are working fine? To me, no.

thanks for the info. I can't really judge stability just yet because I don't have the system up and running. Currently, just processor, mobo, ram and video card is installed. No HD, Floppy, CD (still in old system). I think I am going to take off the pink goop with some goo gone and then use the thermal paste I have from Radio Shack... Any objections? :)

FWIW, I am now the proud owner of a duron 700@950. Week 40. Running at 1.85 volts. I can't even get to windows at 1gig... :( oh well, not too shabby for a $70 processor. :)

Running 50C under full load (RC5 & SETI). If I turn them off, high 30's. Working on the cooling issue now.

Mav, general consensus is that later week durons (after week 30+or-) perform better than earlier ones. I think that this is a little bit of truth, and the rest urban legend. More people are overclocking by week 30 than in week 1.My week 27 goes 1ghz no problem, even relatively cool(39C mod load). It's still a matter of whether or not you get a "lucky" part.

Just for the record... I have a duron 650 (week not checked yet, but will be as soon as i go look now that i know how thanks to you guys). I have it running at 927 with the multiplier set to 9.0 and the FSB at 103 MHz. I can hit 945 if I turn my memory frequency down to 100 and pump up the FSB to 105 MHz. Don't forget about the FSB!! Everyone has been only messing with the multiplier and just forgetting about the FSB... For instance a duron 750 set with a 133 MHz FSB would run alot better than a 750 with the multiplier set to 10.0 and a 100 MHz FSB, right? Anyone making use of the FSB? I have an ASUS A7V by the way...

by the way... according to ASUS probe my temp is 45C now and looms right under 50 with case side off and Chrome Orb fan with AC on. by the way... where do you recommend I look for good case fans? i have a slot for an intake fan in the front and one in the back... I might get one that fits in a PCI slot too... maybe then i can put the case back on...
