May have been answered but why isn't Michigan #2, still?! Look at the scored vs. ND below:

USC v ND: 44-24
Michigan v ND: 47-21

...so why aren't they #2 and USC #3 again?
Read the rest of the thread, wins later in the season count more because coaches have more film to pull from to prepare for each other. Also, USC had to survive the revenge factor from last year. Both wins are impressive, even though IMO the ND that USC beat was a tougher ND than the one Michigan beat.
Why would they count more? USC would be better prepared to beat ND and thus makes Michigan's surprise ownage of ND better...right?

No, because ND played a bunch of easy games after Michigan and had way more time to prepare for USC. Also, they learned a lot from the Michigan game (especially Quinn). USC blowing out a rival who wanted revenge is more impressive IMO. You can bet ND didn't care as much early in the season about Michigan as they did this game because of USC stealing the game in South Bend last year.

Why would a competitive team not care about one game as much as another? Put your fanboi hat down for a minute (I couldn't care less about who is whatever rank) and think about it...why would a team not play 100% each and every game?

Go Rutgers. I really wish Rutgers was able to beat Cincy and still be undefeated (and a possible longshot for the title game). :)

Sports are inherently unpredictable. To not allow an 8th place team the opportunity to win a championship just because they're 8th place is ridiculous.

How many times have we seen rags to riches stories at all sporting levels - these stories are based on one attribute that cannot be quantified or controlled: heart.

Joe Montana had it.
Wayne Gretzky had it.

So many of the greatest sports icons had it.

To not allow Florida, USC and Michigan all the opportunity to win a championship is a travesty. It degrades the quality of the sport and the interest level in it.

As much subjectivity as possible needs to be removed from the sport. To say that we cannot have a rematch in the national championship game - if the best two teams have already played is stupid.
