For a great antidote to mindless shooters, you should try Thief: Thief the Dark Project, Thief Gold (a minor extension of dark), and Thief II. Many styles of play and strategies are possible, but the one that works best and is most interesting is to sneak around in the shadows and avoid conflict. These games have great realism, AI, and immersive atmosphere. Many fans, myself included, have been playing nothing else since the series came out. Great replay potential. I do not get paid for this pitch. As you may know, Looking Glass Studios is defunct, owing not to quality of their excellent prodcuts but bad financial dealings.
Deus Ex also gets a positive nod from Thieves at the forum, but evidently (as they say) it is not quite so reliant on stealth tactics. so the Thieves keep coming back.
Now, as for wanting games that tax the hardware, that is a self-defeating wish, in my opinion. The hardware is good enough. Let's have better quality games that use it to advantage, so the PC does not become more of a money pit than it already is.
